Thursday, July 16, 6 pm: The (M)any Books Book Club meets for another far-reaching, multidimensional conversation about...books! We discussed "Her Last Breath" by Taylor Adams. After years of excuses, Tess has finally agreed to go caving with her best friend Allie. As Tess and Allie descend into the depths, they realize they're not alone. A stranger who claims to be a fellow caver harasses them. Confident, take-no-shit Allie insults the guy--and he retaliates. Soon, Tess is trapped inside a narrow crawl space hundreds of feet underground, fighting to stay alive. First problem, claustrophobia; second, believability. Any spelunker worth their carabiner would know that the women's caving trek is just impossible. But if you like twisty tales, underground, within a tight crawlspace, this book might be for you. "This is for Everyone: The Unfinished Story of the World Wide Web" by Tim Berners-Lee is worth a look even if you were there when the WWW was birthed. "Competitive Sensemaking" by John Nerst was mentioned again because one attendee felt that it's a book to jump into at any point and spend an enjoyable 20 minutes or a half hour contemplating...something. Here's one for our state: "Love and Death in the Sunshine State: The Story of a Crime" by Cutter Wood. Wood was a guest at Sabine Musil-Buehler's motel as the search for her gained momentum, and he found himself drawn steadily deeper into the case. Driven by his own need to understand how a relationship could spin to pieces in such a fatal fashion, he began to meet with the eccentric inhabitants of Anna Maria Island. There is only so much that interviews and records can reveal; in trying to understand why we hurt those we love, this book, like Truman Capote's classic "In Cold Blood," tells a story that exists outside of documentary evidence. Quick note: "Yesteryear" by Caro Caroline Burke, mentioned last month, is being discussed in many book clubs and causing a stir about its kaleidoscopic interpretation(s). Anne Hathway will star in the film version. Grab a copy, if you can find one, to form your own ideas of the book's intentions/revelations/lessons. Please join us for another fun meeting, whether you read the recommendations or not. Read/discuss/recommend your faves, any genre, books, even p*rn. We'll listen. Here's a challenge - Where do you draw the line - what won't you read? We'd like to know! Meeting ID: 929 988 4617. Passcode: happy (Zoom link). Please RSVP to Elissa Rudolph at
elissa12@bellsouth.net or on Meetup.
