Thursday, June 18, 6 pm: The (M)any Books Book Club meets for another far-reaching, multidimensional conversation about...books! One reader nixed "The Endling," mentioned last month as an unusual trip; the trip wasn't worth it. But "Orbital" was a great, earth-circling excursion -- try it, you may find "Orbital" out of this world -- pun intended! Back on the ground, a recommendation for "On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything" by Nate Silver. It's about risk takers, why some people bet it all and some don't. Then, there's "Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to do ‘About it" by Cory Doctorow, with that infamous emoji on the cover. The author states -- "The internet sucks now, it's been enshittified, and we readers can disenshittify it so we can have a new, good internet." Aside from using tons of toilet paper, I'm unsure how that can happen, but this might be a good, cleanbook to peruse. Still on human topics, we recommend "The Humans" by Matt Haig, about an alien from far, far away sent to Earth to wipe out humanity? The alien masquerades as a human taking on our wierd human characteristics and emotions and they begin to question the mission. That's where we learn, maybe we're not so bad after all. Another strange world to explore: "Yesteryear" by Caro Claire Burke, a GMA Book Pick. Here's Natalie, a present day influencer using her Instagram account to show you how living on a 500-acre ranch in Idaho, and making rural life seem effortless, romantic and sweet with six children can be your dream too. She bakes bread and makes jam in her branded apron with branded cookware you can buy for yourself. Viewers never see the microwave hidden in the pantry, two dishwashers disguised as oak cabinets or the two nannies caring for the children. Then one day, Natalie wakes up in 1855, same farmhouse, same red barn and chicken coop, but now she musthaul water and chop wood. What's happened? Which life is real and which is fake? Please join us for another fun meeting, whether you read the recommendations or not. Read/discuss/recommend your faves, any genre, books, even p*rn. We'll listen. Here's a challenge - Where do you draw the line - what won't you read? We'd like to know! Meeting ID: 929 988 4617. Passcode: happy (Zoom link). Please RSVP to Elissa Rudolph at elissa12@bellsouth.net or on Meetup.
