Thursday, Apr. 16, 6 pm: The (M)any Books Book Club meets for another far-reaching, multidimensional conversation about...books! First, recommendations for April include: "Orbital" by Samantha Harvey (winner of the Booker Prize 2024), true-to-life descriptions of how the world looks from the International Space Station as it circles the Earth. Through the eyes of five astro- or cosmonauts this is a meditation on space and fragile life on our pale blue marble. "The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe" by James Patterson. Yes, that guy and that woman. A compendium of all that's been written, filmed, and rumored about MM told as a true crime thriller. The fascination continues. "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt with the subtitle: "How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness." The author maintains that the "great rewiring" has interfered with children's social and neurological development. What do you think? Now, reactions from last month's meeting: "My Friends" was enjoyable, entertaining and readers were sure to follow the Swedish author into his other works for new jokes (Ask me!) and his eminently interesting characters. "Competitive Sensemaking" is a book to be savored, say our book club members, because it contains such provocative ideas, one needs to re-read and re-consider the prose. "Little Liar: A Novel" is a heart-wrenching story of truth and lies set during the Holocaust. One reader summed it up saying "Truth is really the narrator." Let us know what you think of the books mentioned. Or read/discuss/recommend your faves, any genre, books. Won't your join us and add your suggestions? Here's a challenge - Where do you draw the line - what won't you read? We'd like to know! Meeting ID: 929 988 4617. Passcode: happy (Zoom link). Please RSVP to Elissa Rudolph at elissa12@bellsouth.net or on Meetup. |
