Palm Beach County Mensa Calendar of Events - May, 2000

Friday, May 5th. Since the movie, some facts have come to light concerning the sinking of the "Titanic." One example is that most people don't know that in 1912, Hellman's Mayonnaise was manufactured only in England. Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City. The people of Mexico eagerly awaited the first delivery and were very upset at the news of the sinking. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they still observe today. It is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

But seriously, folks, May 5th is actually Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican national holiday that honors the defeat of the French army at Puebla de los Angeles in 1862.

Sunday, May 7th. Conch Stomp Picnic. Noon to 4 PM. It's the Conch Stomp Picnic at the Lake Biwa Pavillion in Delray Beach one-half mile south of Linton Boulevard on Jog Road at the entrance to Morikami Park. Look for the yellow balloons and yellow table cloths at the smaller shelters. They are available on a first-come-you-got-the-sucker basis so we ain't sure exactly which one we will grab, but grab we will. Free conch fritters, free fresh squeezed lemonade, free hot dogs, free charcoal grill. YES, FREE FOOD!! This is MENSA HEAVEN!! Free food and Mensa camaraderie too! Rosalita's features your favorite Tex-Mex specialties such as nachos (any style) and chili con queso appetizers, black bean and tortilla soups, salads and quesadillas, fajitas, enchiladas, seafood entries, hot (*spicy*) dishes and various desserts, all very reasonably priced. The last time I was here, I ordered the fish tacos, deep-fried fish filet fingers in a taco shell with lettuce, tomato and sour cream, yum!
