Fall is almost here, and even though we are veteran Floridians ('71) we still look forward to the cooler evenings when the mosquitoes are less voracious and evening walks are bloodless.
We kicked off September with a pot luck dessert gathering at the LocSecs home. A small, but lively group of Mensans got together for fun and deserts. Puny Miles was there, as was Elissa and Patrick, and Also Rieser and Brian. We told jokes, ate chocolate strawberries, and tried to guess connections in Tribond®. I received several "sorry we can't come but please keep the invitations coming" RSVPs, so we hope some who could not come will participate in our next gathering which will be game night on October 21st.
Our New Program Director has quit, so this post is open again. If you have concerns that Palm Mensa does not have enough gatherings, or they are not close enough to where you live, consider enhancing our local group with your organizational services and become a local area coordinator, and arrange some meetings for the folks in your area. Mensa is what our members make it. Its original purpose to provide an intelligent group of people to converse with is very valid for many of us. Please join us, and give of your time as a volunteer.
Since our Newsletter was a little late this month I decided to send email to all Palm Mensans to alert them to our September 9th Pot Luck Desert gathering. I was amazed that so many Mensans do not permit Mensa to publish their email address. There are so many ways to avoid SPAM these days, from applications that dump SPAM on your ISP server, to applications that run on your computer that do the same, and even request to communicate gates which allow nothing through until you let the recipient know who you are so they can give permission to be contacted. If you are a Mensan who would like to know of events in local Mensa by email, please consider letting National Mensa publish your email to the local group. I have always had my email address published, and have no SPAM from that source. Most SPAM comes from online companies from which merchandise is ordered. Or from sites which provide free downloads of various applications and games.
Thanks for the Mensans who responded to the survey. The sample was too small to draw any conclusions. We will consider the few responses when setting up programs, but also will try alternatives in the hope that non responders will find them interesting.
It was pointed out that we have a number of young Mensans and there is no program for them in Palm Mensa. Broward has a young Mensan gathering once each month. If you have a young Mensan in your family you might want to consider taking them to Broward Mensa activities specifically for them. If you would like to be a Junior Mensan program coordinator for Palm Beach Mensa we would love to talk to you about it.

It looks like 2007 will see Region 10 return to having multiple RGs available. I would have gone into withdrawal if it wasn't for the World Gathering. Central Florida will be hosting its Smarti Gras RG at the end of January, and Northwest Florida will be hosting its ValenTime RG in mid February. Both of these groups have a history of putting on excellent RGs. I heartily recommend both of them. If you don't find information available in your local newsletter, you can download the registration form/information for both of them from the Region 10 website at <region10.us.mensa.org> . (NOTE: At the time of this writing, I have not yet received the forms. They should be on the website by the time you read this.)
It was good to see so many of our Region 10 members at the World Gathering. It did my heart good to see how many of us chose to volunteer to make it the best gathering ever. I believe there were many for whom that was their first ever gathering. What a way to start! I well imagine that those folks are already planning to attend the Annual Gathering next July in Birmingham, Alabama.
I will be attending the fall AMC meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, on the weekend of October 13-15. The agenda for that meeting is on the national website. If you wish to discuss with me any of the issues on that agenda, please email or phone me by October 12. Your input is always welcome. October 21 is Mensa Testing Day (formerly known as National Testing Day). Is your group participating?

Sudoku (数独, sūdoku?), also known as Number Place, is a logic-based placement puzzle. The aim of the puzzle is to enter a numerical digit from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions"), starting with various digits given in some cells (the "givens"); each row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Completing the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Although the puzzle was first published in a U.S. puzzle magazine in 1979, it initially caught on in Japan in 1986 and attained international popularity in 2005.
