COMPUTER WHIZ. Some people think that this is a computer newsletter/magazine. This is not true. I write what I know about. I know about personal computers because I have used them for a long time, since 1992. However, I am not an expert. [By the way, this is YOUR newsletter. The Local Secretary [me] writes a column. When this column is the only column in our newsletter, the newsletter looks like my publication. But it is your publication. This newsletter should have items and articles/columns written by you - the members. The articles can be about anything [pornography excepted]. If there are substantive changes made to your article - beyond basic punctuation and grammar - the editor of this newsletter will get back with you and ask your permission to print it.
GUITAR WHIZ. No, I am not that - in fact I haven't played guitar in ± 10 years. I played acoustic [not electric] guitar. First I had a nylon stringed classical guitar and then I had a steel stringed dreadnought. I really enjoyed entertaining people. I did not not like what I did after I graduated, but I think I would have been happier had I chosen to be an entertainer. It is one of the privileges of being older - having regrets.
ELECTION. We are having an election this month. I am running to continue to be YOUR Local Secretary ["LocSec" or President]. Other positions such as Members at Large and Editor are appointed by the LocSec.
MID-MONTH DINNER. I am thinking about our chapter sponsoring a dinner two Fridays after the First Friday. This dinner would be arranged by a PBCM member, not me, and would be in a restaurant of that member's choosing. [I will inform that member of our requirements]. Since this event would be arranged for by you, the members, I would like your thoughts about this dinner. My e- mail address and my telephone number: bkaras@adelphia.net and 561-964-4360.
TRIVIAL MATTERS. Certain restaurants/bars have NTN [National Trivia Network] trivia. We usually do much better than the local competition - if it can be called that - although very occasionally the local scores are close to ours. National competition is another story…usually we do not place in the top 100 or even 200. And when we do place, it is not appreciated. We were # 3 in the country and the restaurant/bar [and it was a pretty large one] did not even recognize us a little: we didn't even get free beers. I know that Broward Mensa plays, and they can do better than us. It would be great if we could beat them regularly, if not occasionally.

Culture Quest ("CQ") will be held during the afternoon of April 10. The prize is bragging rights (and a small cash award that probably wouldn't take you to Miami). Topics range from film to politics, literature to geography, and music to history. A team can consist of form one to five active members with up to two alternates. Last year over 600 members and 100 teams participated.
This is a terrific opportunity to "strut your stuff," and get some publicity. If a team from our chapter wins a prize, I intend to submit the appropriate information to local T.V. and radio stations, and newspapers.
Please contact Barry Karas for more info.
Palm Beach County Mensa ended January with 319 members. We gained 9 brand new members, renewing or moving into our area. Welcome or welcome back to: Bonnie Fraher of Jupiter, Reiser Mayne of Stuart, Rich Clay of WPB, Katherine Johnson of Boca Raton, Joel Morrison of Boynton Beach, Lawrence E. Hoffer of Boyton Beach, William R. Cummings of Palm Beach, Irving Pearl of Palm Beach, and Lewis Kapner of Palm Beach. Come on out to an event or organize one yourself. We'd like to meet you!
Our condolences to the family of Robert Levy of Boynton Beach who passed away recently.
Palm Beach County Mensa (PBCM) is having an election this month. Members received a ballot as part of their paper newsletter.
Kathy Hickok - I've been a member since 2000, before that I just thought there was something wrong with me. Now I'm sure of it! I've had four semesters of college accounting and several years of bookkeeping experience. I may do a good job as treasurer.
Brian Johnson - Candidate for Local Secretary, Brian Johnson, was born and educated in England. He arrived in the U.S. in 1962 and joined Broward Mensa in 1976. After leaving Florida to follow his career path with Motorola, he returned to the Sunshine State in 2001 and settled in Jupiter with his wife, Judy. Brian's goals for Palm Beach County Mensa include: increasing member participation by having more events; working with a program director to establish programs for all age groups; and to support American Mensa. Ltd.
Barry Karas - As was mentioned, yours truly is running to continue as Local Secretary ("LocSec"). You members are proud of your accomplishments -- and you should be. While you were born with high intelligence, you CHOSE to be a Mensan. Running the chapter for you is my duty. I would like to continue working for you. Please vote for me. Thank you no matter who you vote for.
Tom Winchester - Candidate for Treasurer. I have been a member of Palm Beach County Mensa since 2000 and have lived in Palm Beach County since 1979. I am a local manager for a large company where I have worked for 25 years. My wife Allicyn is a local business owner and CPA. As an avid computer enthusiast I would enjoy using all of the tools available to me to manage the local chapter's finances. As a member who appreciates the few who keep the chapter going year after year, I would be happy to devote my time.
