Notes from the Underground
by Barry Karas

EDITOR. Welcome to our new editor, Andy Ritchason. He is taking over the editing of all PBCM documents, but primarily this newsletter, from Elissa Rudolph who assumed our editorship several years ago. Many thanks go to Elissa who became editor when no one else would. Besides Elissa being RVC and holding down a full time job, the editorship was a doubly hard job.

At this time, I'd like to encourage you to be cooperative with Andy in efforts that require your cooperation.

DEATH OF A PLAYWRIGHT. Arthur Miller just died. He was a major American playwright and I read and/or performed almost all of his works when I was in high school and college. When I was 11 or 12 years old (a long time ago) what I noticed then were his eyeglasses…and his wife…some blond woman who happened to be a movie star. He gave hope to us young men (okay, older boys) who wore eyeglasses that we too could marry someone like MM.

DUES. $52 annual dues is due March 31 for the April 1, 2005 - 2006 membership year. Those members that haven't paid their dues please take heed. Of course, if you have already paid your dues, either in advance or by multi-year dues payment in advance, you should not have to be concerned.

FOREIGNERS. With more and more of you traveling, remember that there are other Mensa members in foreign countries. Many foreign countries have one or more Mensa chapters and the members can be extremely helpful to other members (and their families) who are traveling. Contact me for more information.

CULTURE QUEST XVI. It is on Sunday, April 10th this year. I have written about it elsewhere in this newsletter. Please contact me ((561) 964-4360 or bkaras@adelphia.com ).

STATISTICS. As of October 2004 there are: 48,555 members of AML, 2,292 new members, and 1,518 reinstating members.

RVC Column

Assistant/Acting RVC10    truluvs@cfl.rr.com

If you read the title, you know this isn't going to be Elissa writing, and I am sure you are wondering what is going on. Well, the story is this: our intrepid leader, Elissa Rudolph, is focusing for a couple of months on finishing her master's thesis, and I am fulfilling my duty as her assistant by doing what I can to relieve the load. Your part in this is, for March and April, if you need the RVC's attention or help, contact me. If I can help, I will do it. If I can't, I will find the answer for you, hopefully without bothering Elissa.

There are a lot of terrific things going on in Region 10. Did you know that Keri Guilbault, of CFM, has been named to a national position with Mensa's Gifted Children's Program? Did you know that the Gainesville group is successfully working on rebuilding their calendar? Did you know that MindGames is being hosted by Tampa Bay Mensa this year? Did you know that Region 10 has some of the best Regional Gatherings in the country? (Okay, maybe I am a little bit prejudiced there.) I am sure there are a lot of other outstanding things going on in the region, but most of us don't know about them. If something is going on in your group, share it with me, and it will be my pleasure to share it with the rest of the region.

Speaking of Mind Games, it has an effect on two of our region's regional gatherings. Tampa Bay usually hosts Beach Bash Memorial Day weekend. But that is too soon after Mind Games in April. So Tampa Bay Mensa and Broward Mensa have traded dates for this year only. Broward Mensa's gathering will be Memorial Day weekend, and Tampa Bay's gathering will be in October. The fact that our region's groups can work together that well is another one of those terrific things going on in Region 10. Broward and Tampa Bay, I applaud you!

Most of you know by now that American Mensa is hosting the 2006 World Gathering, in celebration of Mensa's 60th birthday, and it will take place right here in Region 10, at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. Notice that I didn't say that CFM is hosting it. American Mensa is hosting it. That means all of us across the country should get involved. And most especially those of us here in Region 10, just because we are closest at hand, have an opportunity to be actively involved. Think about what you might like to do to participate. Do you have an interest that would make a good program? Contact me! I am program chair. Do you want to help out in hospitality, even if it is only for an hour or two? Contact Jerry Fortner. He is hospitality chair. If you want to help but you aren't sure how, contact Kay Klasen, in Broward Mensa. She is volunteers chair.

Thank you all for helping me give Elissa the time she needs to finish that master's thesis. We can all be proud of her!

CULTURE QUEST, April 10, 2005

Culture Quest ("CQ") will be held during the afternoon of April 10. The prize is bragging rights (and a small cash award that probably wouldn't take you to Miami). Topics range from film to politics, literature to geography, and music to history. A team can consist of from one to five active members with up to two alternates. Last year over 600 members and 100 teams participated.

This is a terrific opportunity to "strut your stuff," and get some publicity. If a team from our chapter wins a prize, I intend to submit the appropriate information to local T.V. and radio stations, and newspapers.

Please contact Barry Karas for more info.

MindGames, April 15-17

Hosted by Tampa Bay Mensa, Double Tree Hotel-Tampa Westshore Airport. Registration-$65 to 4/1. Send registrations to MindGames 2005, 1229 Corporate Drive W, Arlington, TX 76006-6103. The newest games released over the last year are played and judged. The top five games are awarded the highly coveted Mensa Select® seal.
