Palm-MensaPalm Beach County Mensa Newsletter

This is NOT a computer fix-it newsletter. That being said/written, here is information about Keyboard Shortcuts for your personal computer.
I prefer using the keyboard - as opposed to the mouse. The mouse can be a PITA under many circumstances, and it can be slower than using the keyboard. I got much of this information.
Many actions you perform with your mouse can be done using a combination of keys on your keyboard. Shortcuts can save you valuable time, as you won't have to switch between the mouse and keys.
Here are some of the most useful keyboard shortcuts for Windows and Mac OS X.
Windows Keyboard Shortcuts:And there are more options if you have special needs: you can adjust the Accessibility Options of your keyboard and mouse in the Control Panel. You can allow Sticky Keys (one key at a time for key combinations), Toggle Keys, and allow extra keyboard shortcuts in programs.
I used to write this on a desktop PC. Then I noticed my foot swelling (because, I think, I sit in a wheelchair most of the - time). So I bought a new type of PC - a notebook/laptop - with a new operating system ["OS"] - Windows XP Pro as opposed to Windows Millennium Edition ["WinME"], about four steps ahead of WinME.
Believe me, it was a PITA writing this physically even though I am quite experienced with PCs. My cousin, who I "blame" for getting me interested in Mensa in the first place, told me about a docking station for laptops/notebooks that automatically plugs in many things [like a mouse, the AC adapter/power cord, and a "regular" keyboard]. I'll get it.
Palm Beach County Mensa ended September with 325 members. Several members moved away, but we gained 3. Welcome or welcome back to: Jacqueline Callaghan, West Palm Beach; Michael Montgomery, Boca Raton; and Robert Slater, Stuart. Come on out to an event or organize one yourself. We'd like to meet you!
National member stats: 48,006 as of September 2004 with 2,025 new members since April.
Beginning January 1, 2005, dues rates will increase to $35 for additional family members, $52 for primary family members, $140 for three-year memberships, and $229 for five-year memberships. Life Dues rates, based on age when documentation is received at the National Office, also will increase.
What does this mean to you? It means that you'll save by renewing early! The National Office is accepting membership renewals for the coming years in advance of the increase. Visit our renewal page www.us.mensa.org/renew to renew for a single or multi-year plan at the current rate! Or call 817/607-0060 ext. 199. Remember that renewing online saves valuable staff time and allows for quick renewal processing.
Fun and athletic Mensans! Come with the Club Med SIG and 400 new friends to a tropical beach resort for kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, volleyball, dancing, tennis, yoga, and romance. September blew by punctuated by those pesky hurricanes. While my particular area of Delray Beach suffered uprooted trees and power outages, my neighbors to the north and west endured much worse. I hope all of you reading this got through September relatively unscathed. We live in paradise 364 days a year. Then one day (or more) it is definitely not paradise.
During one weekend in September when there was no hurricane, I went to the AMC meeting in Portland, Oregon. A few business items you might be interested in: The preliminary budget for the World Gathering in 2006 was approved. Early registration is $60 until next July (the Web site should be able to take your registration now). There is now a requirement that at least one member of the hospitality committees for large gatherings complete a food safety course prior to the events. And the AMC confirmed that membership in SIGs is limited to members of American Mensa; the SIGs can have participants who are not Ms, but they are not considered "members.". The full minutes of the meeting are available online. The next AMC meeting is in our region-Orlando, at the Coronado Springs Resort, site of WG06. If you'd like to see the venue, come to the meeting December 3 through 5. There will be hospitality, of course, and a chance to meet members of your board of directors.
Thank you all (you know who you are!) for participating in the WG06 logo contest. I'll know the winner soon-hope it is one of Region 10's members!
PS-Two designs, one American, one British, tied for first place. The designs will be online (WG06.us.mensa.org) soon and you'll be able to cast your vote.
