This month's calendar

To Ponder...

This emphasizes the fact that users should have an anti-virus program on their computers:

...a fast-spreading e-mail virus named Sobig.f created headaches starting on August 19. This is now considered the most rampant virus ever created. MessageLabs.com, an enterprise security service, states that Sobig.f in its first week was being carried by 1 out of every 17 e-mail messages. That far surpasses the previous record of 1 in 138 messages that carried the Klez.h virus.

Notes From The Underground
By: Barry Karas

NASTY THINGS. I want to protect my computer, especially since I’m online a lot, so I use both a personal firewall and an anti-virus (AV) program. However, some nasties still get through my AV program even though I update it at least once per week. Just the other Saturday, I spent the better part of a day trying to fix my computer.

FONTS. I was checking out a font the other day and found these technicalities:

EYE: that portion of the lower case "e" that’s enclosed.

EAR: that portion of the lower case "g" below the base that’s enclosed – found in "g" but not the other lower case one.

This is the kind of trivia that appeals to me – and perhaps to some other Mensans.

CHOCOLATE. I just saw a teevee show that attributed a person’s death to (his love of) chocolate. And I just read, from a newsgroup dedicated to ABC's overnight news show, that there is one giant piece of chocolate that weighs 6750 pounds and is the equivalent of more than 600,000 regular-sized kisses. I don’t know what (if anything) this means...

ADVERTISEMENTS. Over Oct., Nov., and Dec. national Mensa will run ads in the following magazines:

  • Oct. – Blender, Maxim and Metropolis.
  • Nov. – Motor Trend and Wired.
  • Dec. – European Car, Automobile and Playboy.

"Playboy?" When I was a kid, I wanted "to read" that magazine. Of course my parents didn’t let me "read" the mag. Now I could get away with it. Gee, I wonder if the ad is going to be in the centerfold?

UPDATES. Sometimes, the national office does not have your most current information. In order to prevent this from happening, we should make updates to our information. Updates may be made on the national web site, by e-mail (memberprocessing@americanmensa.org), or telephone (817-607-0600 X 199). Of course changes made by fax or postal mail are okay too. And you could notify me or any member of our executive board.

The Tenth Story
(RVC Column for Region 10; September 2003)
By Elissa Rudolph

Remember the "September Song" -- the one about the autumn leaves turning flame? Here in Florida, we don’t need a calendar to know when it’s September—instead of leaves changing color to indicate a change of seasons, the license plates change color as the snowbirds return (inexorably) to sunny climes. Is your group ready for National Testing Day next month on the 18th? If not, get your ducks in a row and take advantage of the National Office’s media blitz. Get your test locations onto the national Web site for the best exposure. Each year since NTD was begun, we’ve had an increasing number of inquiries, test takers and joiners. So jump on the bandwagon!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello to All,

"Did you order that bathing suit yet?" That’s my husband Bill needling me to spend money when I really don’t want to. I know it’s hard to believe a woman doesn’t want to shop, but trust me when I tell you that whenever we have spent money in the past, there have been repercussions.

We purchased an ocean kayak a month ago, so we could fish from it in skinny water, and we haven’t been out in it since then because of lousy weather. Now you know what caused that August seventh windstorm in the central part of Palm Beach County. In addition to that, in late July, for the first time EVER, Bill paid someone else to wash his car. And I feel really guilty about all the rain I’ve caused by setting the sprinkler system for two mornings a weeks.

But the reason for even more important anomalies like Gary Coleman possibly running for governor of California and someone in Stuart, Florida, selling bottled water for dogs, is that I just got a new computer.

My apologies to all.

P.S.
New e-mail is hickok4@msn.com

Until next month...Kathy

How about Boynton Beach’s Little League in the LL World Series?
