To Ponder...
All living souls welcome whatever they are ready to
cope with; all else they ignore, or pronounce to be wrong, or deny to
be possible. Who said it?
(email elissa12@bellsouth.net) and gain fame and accolades)
Quoters of last month's quotes: Andy Warhol-deeply
superficial; Napoleon-kept his word; Hitler-men who do not think;
Balinese proverb-dancing!; Winston Churchill-eating his words; Walt
Disney-getting that good idea.

? ? ? ? TRIVIA ? ? ? ?
Do you enjoy answering "way out" questions? NTN
Trivia has many games, but the best one (from a pure knowledge
standpoint) is Showdown on Tuesday evenings from about 8:30 to 10:00
PM. Beldar (the team's name) is doing quite well and the opposition has
taken to cheating to try to beat us. We are happy to report that Beldar
still comes out on top...in fact the main effect of the cheating is to
make us do better. Contact Barry Karas (bkaras@mindspring.com or (561)
964-4360) for more information.

The Tenth Story - RVC Update
Elissa Rudolph
Before
the end of February American Mensa reached the 50,000-member mark, a
level that the organization has not enjoyed since 1994. Many reasons
account for the high mark-foremost of which, in my opinion, is ability
of most Ms to hang in there even when the picture is not so rosy. We
are, after all, like a big family not quite the Osbournes, not quite
the Nelsons, but somewhere in between. Another reason may be that new
Ms now stay longer than a year. It's always been my contention that if
you give Mensa at least two years, you're more likely to stay longer.
Bring on the challenges! We can do it!
The seventh
annual "Bikers vs. Brainers" trivia contest held by Southwest by South
Florida Mensa took place in February. Going into the contest Bikers and
Brainers were tied, 3 to 3. This Mensa sponsored trivia contest
benefits the group's scholarship fund and always draws standing room
only crowds. In the seventh face-off, guess who won?? The Brainers!
Congratulations to SWS Ms!!
In the
other corner of the region, more congrats are in order for the NW
Florida Mensa group. Their very first RG, ValenTime, held you-know-when
was a big hit. Ninety or more Ms attended both from the local area and
the surrounding counties/states. Despite the looonngg drive from my
balliwick (about 12 hours, if the speed limit is assiduously observed),
I enjoyed the hospitality, programming, scenic setting, and seeing this
relatively small group (less than 200) run a successful event.
Now about
the south Florida LDW-Leadership Development Workshop. All day
Saturday, April 26 we have organized workshops to inform, entertain,
and stimulate you. Come and enjoy all or part of the day with Broward,
Palm Beach, Miami Ms, and Ms from other groups. See you there?
May 23-26,
Tampa Bay Mensa's, The Fellowship of the RG, Jack Brawner
(trojanowl@aol.com) or John Raymond (jmraymond3@aol.com). It's a return
to the water at the Days Inn, Rocky Point, off the causeway. |

Notes From the Underground
Barry Karas
50,000.
After five straight years of growth, Mensa has attained 50,000 members.
In fact, the number now is 50,176. Renewals and reinstatements are over
90%.
CONGRATULATIONS.
To our own Elissa Rudolph as RVC-10 for the April 1, 2003 to 2004
membership year. Don't forget to vote. The ballot and candidate
materials will be sent to all eligible members as of 4/1/2003 with the
Bulletin that will be sent on April 15. Ballots must be returned by
5/31/2003.
ANNUAL
GATHERING. This year it's at St. Paul, Minnesota from July 2 to July 6.
This annual gathering is presented in connection with Mensa Canada. It
is occurring during the summer and it should be a relief from the
summer here - and most importantly, it looks to be a lot of fun.
RENEWAL. If
you haven't renewed yet, please renew now. You can renew on the U.S.
Mensa web site (http://www.us.mensa.org). Or you can contact me
(561-964-4360 or bkaras@NOSPAMmindspring.com) for details. (Delete the
"NOSPAM" from my e-mail address. As I mentioned before, many spammers
send out robots that cull e-mail addresses from web pages.)
MIND GAMES. This year they're in Houston, TX on the April 11th weekend.
YOUNG
MENSANS. We are pleased to have 18 members under age 18. I have their
addresses but not their telephone numbers or e-mail addresses. If this
information is to be known by me, a parent should supply the
appropriate information.
CULTUREQUEST.
CQ-XIV is Sunday, April 27, 2003 at 3:00 PM. We need three more members
for our team of five. Please contact Ed Gross by April 20th if you want to sign up or if you want more information. |

Event Reviews: Selling Your Book
Prudy
Taylor Board, award-winning author, regaled her audience with helpful
hints and funny stories regarding getting their book projects noticed
and published last month. Ruthanne Flaum, her friends Shelly and Bert,
Dan Dell, Janice Johnson and friend Sherry, Jennifer Giunta, Don Van
Dusen, Laura Michaels, another Bert, and Elissa Rudolph all picked up
ideas to further their writing projects. Talking to a person who's been
through it all is a golden experience! Visit Prudy at

own, very accomplished members. |

Dusty Recommends
(shy, retired librarian)
Miss Dustinea Jacquette
While
relaxing under the Tuscan sun and drinking wine coolers, Miss Dusty
read the newest "Cat Who..." book from Lilian Jackson Braun and Orchid
Blues by Floridian Stuart Woods. The 25th book in the
series, "The Cat Who Brought Down the House" is the tail of a new
resident in Pickax, Moose County, 400 miles north of everywhere. She is
a Hollywood celebrity come home to set her affairs in order and
renovate the local opera house, in disrepair for many years. Local
columnist Qwilleran-Qwill, our hero-is immensely wealthy but funnels it
through a foundation; and dates the town librarian, Polly. Owner of
prescient Koko and delicious YumYum, a pair of Siamese who think they
are people, Qwill, helps Thelma Thackeray, the actress, feel
comfortable in the town she left 40 years before. Amidst kidnappings, a
suicide that could be murder, lost belongings, Koko's precognitive
yowls, and small town intrigue, author Ms. Braun manages to give
Pickax, Qwill, and the Siamese such spirit that readers want to move
400 miles north of everywhere. I know I do.
On the
other hand, Orchid Blues, about a Florida town called Orchid Beach
(could it be Vero Beach where the author lives?), is a murder mystery
with an unsettling element of a cult of NRA advocates, amassing money
and weapons in a nowhere town near a big lake. Apparently, the cult is
planning assassinations and general havoc to show their disenchantment
with the current political situation. They rather fancy themselves as
saviors of American freedom. It's a fast read with retired military men
playing spy and the FBI and local law enforcement at odds with each
other. A beach book as are the "Cat Who..." books.
Next month, "Adam and Eve and Pinch Me" by fave British author Ruth Rendell. |
