- Many
of your e-mail addresses are out-of-date according to bounce messages
that I got shortly after sending a message to you. Or you may be new to
computing and the Internet. For whatever reason, I would like to update
the PBC Mensa e-mail address list. Please note that our e-mail list
is completely separate from that of National and we only use your
addresses for PBC Mensa business. The people at National know absolutely nothing about an e-mail address or change unless you give me permission to notify them.
- Please send your e-mail address information to me (bkaras@mindspring.com) and entitle it "E-mail address." Thank you.

When
ABC's Good Morning America put out a call for creative performances of
their new theme song, some members of Mensa took it as a challenge.
With the help of translator Sheryl Pockrose, siblings Charlie, Chris
and Eileen Steinhice and Jessica (Steinhice) Mathews taped themselves
singing the song. . .in Latin.
Good Morning America loved the tape and included it in their 7/17
broadcast. Having interviewed the members involved, they added fun
facts about the Steinhice family and ran the Latin lyrics along the
bottom of the screen.

To Ponder...
What
is an "aptronym"? It's an "apt" name for anyone whose work or career
seems to match their name, i.e., Johnny Appleseed who sowed apples,
Sally Ride, the astronaut, Dan Druff, a barber, and James Bugg, an
exterminator.
Tom Winchester (Tony Funk, Sewer Svc.), Megan Williams (John Cash
Penney, founder, JC Penney), and Jefferson Davis all win accolades (no
cash) for their responses.
Do not fear the next question--rhytiphobia is fear of what? No fair going to Google...but I can't stop you. How about:
Verbaphobia--easy!--orTaphephobia? Siderodromophobia?Lyssiophobia?
Maddening, isn't it? Write to the editor with your guesses. Let's make
it interesting. Use the word in a sentence so that we understand what
it means. Don' tell us outright. |

The Tenth Story - RVC Update
Elissa Rudolph
An
article in an Arizona newspaper quoted an AG attendee, "I look at this
as a family reunion with all the relatives you like." And that's what
brings us back again and again, that undeniably sweet feeling of coming
home. Yes, even to Scottsdale in July where the temperature at 6:30 in
the morning could be 91. At the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, however,
there were three swimming pools to cool you off and the Willow Stream
Spa to help you really feel rejuvenated. Then there were the AG
programs for mental stimulation, tours to Taliesin West, the Grand
Canyon, and Sedona, plus horseback riding to expand your horizons, and
we haven't even begun to describe the gustatory delights of the 2002
American Mensa AG. In the seven restaurants and bars on site at the
Princess, Mensans received a 50 percent discount-right-50 percent! Then
there were those infinite choices in Hospitality... To see over 400
photos of Mensans having fun go to: http://www.or.us.mensa.org/pix/ag2002/rainey/2/index.htm Thanks to Scott Rainey, RVC8, who was extremely busy with his digital camera.
Results of the Publications Recognition Program can be found at http://us.mensa.org/best_of/2002printwinners.php
Despite the fact that our region's wonderful newsletters were nominated
for 22 awards, we came away with only a couple: PensaMensa, newsletter
of Northwest Florida Mensa won an award for their photographic covers
and BrowBeat, Broward Mensa, won for their cover art, Lya Korda,
artiste. While the number of awards was small, our nominations were
large-we have to look on the bright side!
On the
other hand, the AMC had a unpleasant decision to consider based on the
Hearings Committee's recommendation. You will no doubt hear and read
many, many opinions on this (how many Mensans are there?), but the fact
is that the HC rendered an unanimous decision that a member committed
an act inimical-harmful-to Mensa. Acts inimical may result in expulsion
from the society. This is what happened when the vote was tallied on
Saturday, July 6, 2002-15 for and 4 against expulsion. The vote was
taken by written ballot, as is called for in our bylaws. One AMC member
recused himself and one abstained; neither took a ballot to vote. The
Hearings Committee did a fine job with what had to be a very
disagreeable chore. If you would like to read the bylaws and/or the
ASIEs (actions still in effect) concerning the "acts inimical" area,
let me know and I'll point the way. This is over, time to direct our
energies to more progressive ways to improve our organization.
Mini-Minutes and the full minutes of this AMC meeting should be available by the time you read this in your newsletter.
A very
tentative bid has been put together to invite Mensa's International
Board of Directors to conduct their 2006 meeting in Orlando along with
a celebration of Mensa's 60th anniversary. During the IBD's
meeting this coming October, they will consider American Mensa's bid;
there may be others from various Mensa world chapters. This bid is
really an invitation from Region 10, because I would expect that all
our groups would be involved in some way. Much of the administrative
and contract work will be done by the National Office, leaving Central
Florida Mensa and our other groups free to be creative with programming
and hospitality. Already Florida Ms are volunteering to be part of this
World Gathering; I hope you will want to be part of it too!
This past
year has just flown by and I still have many goals to reach for in
Region 10. I hope to continue as your RVC for an additional two years
(2003-2005) in order to complete my goals, one of which is to visit
your group at some point in my tenure.
Coming Events:
Looking for
intellectual stimulation, yearning for that brain tickle you joined
Mensa for? Here's a deal for you-"Exploring Consciousness," the 2002
Colloquium in Troy, Michigan August 16-18. Check their Web site: http://www.colloquium2002.org/ for descriptions of "thinking on the edge."
October 18-20, the 2002 SCAM Rollback RG, http://spacecoastareamensa.tripod.com/ , for details as they emerge.

Notes From the Underground
Barry Karas
AG. There's
not much news this month as many members and employees attended the
Annual Gathering ("AG") in Arizona. Next year the AG will be at
Minneapolis, MN around July 4th. I hope I will be able to attend 'cause
AGs are a lot of fun.
DISGUISE.
The International Spy Museum just opened (in Washington, DC) in the
nick of time. I read that there is a store there that will sell me a
disguise. I might need that disguise if the administration has its way
and implements the Terrorism Information and Prevention System
("TIPS"). Ordinary people can spy on me and report me as a suspected
terrorist. Maybe I could dress up as my Aunt Gertrude? However, doing
that may not work: "Aunt Gertrude is acting "funny" 'cause she is
watching porn on the Internet..."
ADDRESS. My
correct e-mail address is <bkaras@NOSPAMmindspring.com>. Remove
the "NOSPAM." (As Glen put it on our "contacts" web page, this is done
here to help protect privacy. E.g., spammers often send robots ("bots"
in Net lingo) to get e-mail addresses on new and changed web pages; if
the addresses are incorrect, that spam will not reach you.) |

Member News and Updates
Glen Moulder and Elissa Rudolph
Our group
now stands at 294. Two members moved out, but 8 moved in or renewed or
became new members. Welcome back to David Baumgardner, Dr. Jerome Haas,
Matthew Kurit, Elizabeth Mabry, and Angela True. Welcome to brand new
members Bill Carducci and George Riley. Christine Corr moved into our
group. Join us for an event or organize one that YOU like! We'd love to
catch up with you.
About 60 Palm Beach Ms. received a reminder recently to renew their
membership and we hope they do. Of the 60 or so who did not renew, only
13 were members longer than 4 years. The rest gave up after what seems
like a short time....
On the national front our numbers stand at 42,848 at the end of June.
Last June we were about a thousand less. Interesting to see the
comparison between last June's requests for information/brochures, most
of which come through Mensa's Web site. This June, 1,755 requests and
last June, 1,080.
Please note: If you don't see your birthday shown in this section when
it should appear, you probably indicated to the national office that
this information should be withheld. If so, and you do want it to
appear, simply contact the national office and change your information
withholding preferences.

July Events Review
|
Northern Exposure
NCG
was held last month at the Norris's. Those attending were Laura
Bulawski, Bobbie Kadlecz, Mike Purcell, Sharon Robertson, Janice
Johnson, Alan Posner and Bill Whitesell. This is a regular event in the
northern reaches of our chapter. They would be glad to see you--why not
join them in August? |

Crab House Breakfast
Glen Moulder
The Crab
House breakfasts are being suspended until this fall when our host, the
charming and entertaining Rich Linett returns to the area. Look for us
at the Crab House each month though in our Perkophiles breakfast
incarnation.
|
|
First Friday - at Colucci's Attic
No report received this month.

|
Perkophiles - Glen Moulder
July's Perkophiles was the
smallest yet. Bob and Ann Abbott, me and my friend Banetta L. enjoyed
another good breakfast. We discussed the educational system, Bob's work
on a web site for the condo complex where he lives, computers and other
topics. The Crab House is one of most unappreciated places in the
county to have a quiet breakfast where you can actually here your
friends talk. I've waited in lines at other restaurants that did not
offer the same quality of food, service and atmosphere. Hope to see YOU
on August 18th. |
|
Mensa Dining Adventure
Barry
Karas' dining suggestion for July was Payathai, a Thai-Japanese tiny
restaurant that catered nicely to our group of 18 diners: Barry, John
Swick, Sharron Ronco, Ed & Tessie Gross, Fay Harrington and her
friend June, Rene & Antoinette Revert (hope I got that correct!),
Joan Zieff and her friend Joyce, Gino Giglio, Tom & Allicyn
Winchester, Prudy Taylor Board, Clark Marks & Julie Peterson, and
ye ed. Tables were too small for all the yummy dishes, but we managed!
Join us for McCarthy's in Tequesta on August 17. And if you have a
favorite restaurant or want to try one out, let us know! We love going
to new places. |
|
Mensa Annual Gathering
The
next biggest event last month was the AG at the Fairmont Scottsdale
Princess Resort that drew 1500+ Ms from all over the world. What a
place! Five restaurants (50% off for Mensans), 3 pools, a spa ($25 all
day!), boutiques, horseback riding, a tour of Taliesin West, lots of
programs, fun, food & friends. Just ask me (Elissa) --I have lots
of photos & many fond memories!
Here's a photo from the AG of me (on the right), and my friends Pam and Skinner.
