- Many
of your e-mail addresses are out-of-date according to bounce messages
that I got shortly after sending a message to you. Or you may be new to
computing and the Internet. For whatever reason, I would like to update
the PBC Mensa e-mail address list. Please note that our e-mail list
is completely separate from that of National and we only use your
addresses for PBC Mensa business. The people at National know absolutely nothing about an e-mail address or change unless you give me permission to notify them.
- Please send your e-mail address information to me (bkaras@mindspring.com) and entitle it "E-mail address." Thank you.

ISO
NEWSLETTER EDITOR. For the past year, Elissa has been our Editor, and
has done an excellent job. However, she has another time-consuming
Mensa activity, that of RVC-10, in addition to a full-time job. She was
elected Regional Vice Chairperson of our Florida region about the same
time she took on our Editor position. In order that she have enough
time to fulfill her RVC duties well, it is necessary for her to pass on
the Editor's job to another PBCM member. The production and mailing
activities are done well by Donna Bognar. The Internet web development
and implementation, as well as computer questions in general, are
handed very aptly by Glen Moulder. There is more time for the Editor to
pursue pure editorial functions than before. Please contact either
Elissa (561-496-0124 or elissa12@bellsouth.net) or me (561-964-4360 or bkaras@bigfoot.com) if you are interested in the overall editor job or the calendar editor job. -Barry Karas

Last month you
received a survey from Norbert Brown. If you have not returned it as
yet, please do. Norbert reports that at this point he has received over
20 surveys (despite the fact that the zipcode was missing!--it's 33486)
with very helpful information about what these members want to see and
do with Palm Beach County Mensa. Look for his comprehensive report here
next month. Thanks, Norbert!
Annual and Regional Gatherings (AGs, RGs) are unique events in
Mensa, definitely march ing to the beats of different drummers. If you
have not attended an AG or RG, you are missing out on a rare
experience. After the AG in Scottsdale this month, why not attend one
of these RGs in our region - you won't regret it!

To Ponder...
Last
month's puzzling sentences were "pangrams,"each one of which used all
26 letters of the alphabet (pan=all). Two bright readers-of course,
you're all bright!-caught the correct answer: Donna Bognar & Bob
Abbott.
New question: What is an "aptronym" and give examples so we know you know the answer.
Fame awaits you here. |

Notes From the Underground
Barry Karas
WEB PAGE. We had a
problem with our server. It seems that Playboy Enterprises bought up
our old URL. This never came to light until our server company
physically moved. (Unfortunately - for some of us - Playboy never
utilized the page.) So we have a new URL, which we own. Please adjust
your settings (URLs) to: http://www.pbcmensa.com
RIGHTS. Most of the
abridgements of our freedom/rights are necessary to combat terrorism.
But I feel uncomfortable with many of them because they're not specific
enough. For example, I can see little specificity in subject matter
that directly relates to terrorism (they can be used in the prosecution
of alleged white collar crimes), and I don't see any time frames (they
can be used long after the terrorist threat is mostly eliminated).
Members of the
CURRENT administration, including the Attorney General, SAY there won't
be any abuses. The abuses that occurred during the Vietnam War (BTW, it
wasn't an official war) and the Nixon Administration are still fresh in
my memory.
QUESTIONNAIRE. Last
month, there was a questionnaire in the newsletter edition that was
mailed to you. In it, we wanted to find out what you are interested in
and if you are willing to pursue your interest. I hope that many, if
not all, of you either returned or will soon return the survey. If you
want another copy of the survey please contact either Elissa or me. If
you would prefer, this can be handled by e-mail.
I have been reading
other newsletters from chapters in our region. Most activities, like
ours, tend to be social. However, some chapters have other activities
also. Those activities are pursued and run by the same people. (For
example, Bob Dolson runs our First Friday event each month. He makes
all the arrangements, handles the reservations, and chooses the
location...each month. We all know that this "automatically" occurs and
who to contact in the event we want to attend.)
RENEWAL. Each year at
this time (April 1) Mensa loses many members. Our chapter is no
different - we lost 63 members. Many have either paid their dues late,
or their dues payments haven't been recorded by the National Office. I
will have sent out a letter to all officially lapsed members inviting
them to stay. If you have any questions, or if you have paid your dues,
please contact me. (Actually, many lapsed members might not see this
since they do not get mailed newsletters. But I publish this here
anyway because some of you may have friends and/or relatives who were
members.) |

Member News and Updates
Glen Moulder and Elissa Rudolph
Our group now stands
at 288, after the renewal period. We lost, misplaced, or did not
continue to appeal to about 60 Ms. We did have five members come back
quickly after less than a year and two renewed after more than a year.
We're glad you're all back! Join us for an event or organize one that
YOU like!
Please note: If you
don't see your birthday shown in this section when it should appear,
you probably indicated to the national office that this information
should be withheld. If so, and you do want it to appear, simply contact
the national office and change your information withholding preferences.

Crab House Breakfast

The Crab House
breakfasts are being suspended until this fall when our host, the
charming and entertaining Rich Linett returns to the area. Look for us
at the Crab House each month though in our Perkophiles breakfast
incarnation.

Beach Walk
Elissa Rudolph/Kay Skoog
The BeachWalk in June uncovered a
mysterious white substance thrown up on the beach by the tide. All
along our 2-mile walk this white (looked like rice noodles, cooked)
stuff ran right along beside us. Kay Skoog, BeachWalk organizer,
reports that the sea mystery was identified as sea grass.

|
Turtlewalk
Elissa Rudolph
Ms.
Loggerhead Turtle heaved her 350-pound bulk out of the ocean at the
TurtleWalk last month to lay a clutch of about 100 eggs. Having us
watch her did not deter her. She dug a nest high on Red Reef Beach so
close to the seagrape that the vegetation got in her way. The old adage
goes that the higher on the beach the turtles lay their eggs the more
devastating the hurricane season. Remember, you heard it from a turtle
first. Accompanying the ed. on the TurtleWalk were Brenda, Ken, Emily,
and Connor Elkins (Connor is one of our younger members at age 6). The
TurtleWalk will likely become an annual event, since ye ed. finds the
experience awesome.

Perkophiles - Glen Moulder
As is nearly always the case in the
summer, the June Perkophiles was a small, but friendly conversational
success. Bob and Ann Abbott, Bob Dolson, me, my friend Charlene and her
nephew Lance, visiting from Holland enjoyed diverse topics and one of
the best breakfasts yet. The restaurant was almost deserted and though
it rained, we sat on the deck and appreciated the view. We'll look
forward to seeing you in July.
Come on out and join us on July 21st (yes, that's now Sunday), bring your appetite for good food and conversation. |

Mensa Dining Adventure
The
Old Key Lime House in Lantana is so easy to find because it's
painted....lime!! Despite dreary, rainy weather these Mensans found the
little lime house: Brian & Judy Johnson, Linda & Marisa
Stabile, Fred & Cheryl Nohle, Joan Zieff, Fay Harrington, Don Van
Dusen, and ye ed. Want to see catfish walking on each other's backs?
Want to take part in a rousing discussion of politics and genetics?
Join our dining group next time!

Dusty Recommends
Miss Dustinea Jacquette
that you go to the local library and check out the books and the librarians...
Or try reading "The
Vow" by P.F. Foster (our member Prudy Taylor Board). This is a horror
fiction story, a real page turner, set near Lake Okeechobee in a town
called Hurricane Bay. Author Prudy has some semantic fun (see if you
can catch her wit) while telling the story of a young artist caught up
in a plot to extend the life of a demon. Wind, rain, and the dark of
night give the story the right atmospherics and the young woman's
vulnerability adds an empathetic note. It took me (Elissa) only 2
nights to read The Vow. If you would like to borrow it-it's now out of
print-let me know.
Next is "Blood Legacy," also by Prudy. |
