- Many
of your e-mail addresses are out-of-date according to bounce messages
that I got shortly after sending a message to you. Or you may be new to
computing and the Internet. For whatever reason, I would like to update
the PBC Mensa e-mail address list. Please note that our e-mail list
is completely separate from that of National and we only use your
addresses for PBC Mensa business. The people at National know absolutely nothing about an e-mail address or change unless you give me permission to notify them.
- Please send your e-mail address information to me (bkaras@mindspring.com) and entitle it "E-mail address." Thank you.

ISO
EDITOR. For the past year, Elissa has been our Editor, and has done an
excellent job. However, she has another time-consuming Mensa activity,
that of RVC-10, in addition to a full-time job. She was elected
Regional Vice Chairperson of our Florida region about the same time she
took on our Editor position. In order that she have enough time to
fulfill her RVC duties well, it is necessary for her to pass on the
Editor's job to another PBCM member. The production and mailing
activities are done well by Donna Bognar. The Internet web development
and implementation, as well as computer questions in general, are
handed very aptly by Glen Moulder. There is more time for the Editor to
pursue pure editorial functions than before. Please contact either
Elissa (561-496-0124 or elissa12@bellsouth.net) or me (561-964-4360 or bkaras@bigfoot.com) if you are interested in the overall editor job or the calendar editor job. -Barry Karas

NOVEL WRITING WORKSHOP
Got
a desk drawer filled with 50 page novels that you started but couldn't
finish? There's a reason and a solution. Prudy will share both with you
at a novel writing workshop on May 19. She'll discuss outlining,
plotting, settings, characters and dialogue and more. Bring your
questions.
Prudy has had 13 books
including two novels published. For 18 years, she has taught all phases
of writing and worked with writers, a number of whom have had novels
published by New York publishing houses. She's also worked as the
editor of magazines, newsletters and newspapers. At present, she is the
editor of SELL!NG, a monthly newsletter published by Dartnell
Publishing. Her most recent book, which will be published by Donning
Co. Publishers in the Fall, is the history of The Port Royal Club, a
private club in Naples, Florida. She is currently completing the final
revision of The Last Resort, a murder mystery set on an island in South
Florida featuring the host of a TV cooking show as the protagonist.

ACRONYMS
http://www.acronymsearch.com/
This is very useful, especially for those new to computing and/or
stymied by all of the acronyms. It seems like computing has more than
its share of acronyms. (Although this is not limited to computing, it's
used more for that since you are on the computer in the first place...
This tip was suggested by Tom Winchester.

To Ponder...
"Out of the
Loud Hound of Darkness," a Dictionarrative by Karen Elizabeth Gordon,
is an essential and sentential fictionary-amusing, eccentric,
intelligent. Here's how the author demonstrates the difference between blond and blonde: Blond
is an adjective for either sex, and now and then it gets away from hair
altogether to describe other materials. As a noun it refers to a
light-haired fellow. A blonde is a blond female, usually human,
but in this book not necessarily. Author's example: "With his red
mustache, blond sideburns, black eyebrows, and silver lining, General
Pvbxtrz was a walking tapestry of all the genetic permutations ever
visited upon his clan." Gordon loves to play with her words! |

The Tenth Story - RVC Update
Elissa Rudolph
Congratulations
to our region-all of the local secretaries and most of the officers
renewed their memberships before March 31! Ours was the ONLY region
whose locsecs were legal on April 1-no foolin'!
At the March AMC meeting in
New Jersey there was huge agenda, but we got through it on Saturday by
5:30pm. The main item of business, which you probably already know
about, is the unanimous passage of the increase in funding to local
groups-from $7.85 per member to $8.15 per member. This increase of
$4,829 for all regions is simply a reallocation of funds, with most of
the new funds coming from a reduction in RVC funds. Most of the RVCs
feel that this is a good use of funds. We spend it all helping out
groups in trouble, visiting far-flung groups, and in our case,
purchasing Region 10 Officer Pins.
Another "good thing" is a
bequest to MERF for increased scholarships. Now a Mensa member or a
child of a Mensa member may qualify for a $500 award.
There will be one day of
funding at the AG in Scottsdale for any Mensan who would like to chair
an LDW. Don't know what an LDW is? A Leadership Development Workshop
usually is a day of training for any local leaders be they locsecs,
editors, proctors, treasurers, or even those members who are thinking
of taking an office. The leadership materials are already thought out
and outlined. Leaders from the national office or other national
representatives will come to discuss a certain part of the workshop.
All funding for the workshop is underwritten by the LDW project, so
there is minimal cost to the local group that hosts it. Region 10
should be thinking about an LDW somewhere in the state. Anyone
interested in learning more or knowing exactly what goes on at an LDW?
Call or email me and I'll give you the lowdown.
Our regional spotlight this
month is on our big west coast group, Tampa Bay Mensa. At around 500
members, this is a strong group with their share of, shall we say,
unusual characters. They will be holding an RG, the All American
Weekend, at the end of this month. This event used to be a the beach
but is now at a quirky, fun hotel near Busch Gardens. See details at
the end of this column. Tampa Bay's April newsletter, Tampa Bay Sounding,
contains a little of everything: a calendar, of course, puzzles,
election notice, poetry, a story about nurturing dolphins, ExComm
minutes, and "Miss Piggy's Guide to Life." Sample question-How can you
tell if you're physically fit? a) Can you make & eat a cake in
under one hour?; b) Can you touch your toes with your purse?; or c) Can
you life at least five credit cards at one time? Got a laugh out of me!
And a good job on a newsletter that has something for everyone! Keep up
the good work, Tampa Bay!
Coming events:
May 24-27, Tampa Bay Bash "All American Weekend," same hotel as last year, www.thatparrotplace.com ; or Sylvia Zadorozny, 813-855-4939, szadorozny@aol.com
July 3-7, AG 2002: Desert Delights in Scottsdale, AZ. Don't miss Mensa's biggest gathering of the year! Something for everyone-just check out your latest Bulletin.
October 18-20, the 2002 SCAM Rollback RG, http://spacecoastareamensa.tripod.com/ , for details as they emerge.

Notes From the Underground
Barry Karas
SKIP. Some
of you MIGHT miss an issue of this newsletter because you paid your
dues after March 31, 2002. Since the June issue of Palm Mensa
will not be sent to people who did not renew their memberships before
March 31, this might be the last newsletter you receive. If you want to
pay your dues for 4/1/2002 through 3/31/2003 now, go to http://www.us.mensa.org and click on "renew/rejoin" or call (817) 607-0060 ext. 199.
WELCOME. We
have eight new members: Norbert Brown, Caitlin Burns, Devin Burns,
Connor Elkin, Steven Meyer, Adam Selmer, Margaret Haney, and Jordy
Yarnell. Two members moved into our territory: Deborah Watson and
Alexis Viteri. Nancy Johnson reinstated.
JUICY.
Sharon Stone told Joan Rivers on Oscar night that she went to a Mensa
school. There was only one Mensa school, and that existed for a few
years in the early 1960s. So Ms. Stone is either much older than she
purports to be, or she is full of it. You do the math.
UPCOMING
EVENTS. Annual Gathering, July 3-7, Phoenix, AZ. Colloquium, August
16-18, Troy, MI. National Testing Day (NTD), October 19, at many local
Mensa locations.
PERSONNEL
DATA QUESTIONNAIRE (PDQ). A new edition of the PDQ is both being sent
to you and is on the National Mensa Web site
(http://www.us.mensa.org/). Privacy release questions have changed as
well status and birthdate information. |

As of 3/31/02, we have 342 members-8 brand new members, 1 reinstated member, and 2 move-ins. Welcome or welcome back!!
American

the actual total was 49,837, 87% of which are retained from the
previous year. New members accounted for nearly 10% of the total. The
number of life members has increased over the past 3 years to 3057
currently.
Please
note: If you don't see your birthday shown in this section when it
should appear, you probably indicated to the national office that this

April Events Review
|
Northern Exposure
The
April North County Gathering was held at Johnnys Family Restaurant.
Those attending were Bobbie & Julius Kadlecz, Donna Bognar, Deche
Hamill, Mike Purcell, Sharon Robertson and Bill Whitesell. The food was
very good and very reasonable.
May's NCG will be held at the Kadlecz home on Sunday, May 19 at 3 PM. See calendar for details. |
|
Crab House Breakfast
Glen Moulder
The April
breakfast was a bit subdued since most of the regulars are snowbirds
and were preparing for their seasonal flights. We didn't even annoy any
of the wait staff! Better luck next month, come on out and visit with
us you unknowns. |
|
First Friday - at Colucci's Attic
No report received this month. |
|
Perkophiles - Glen Moulder
No Perkophiles in April, I'm still recovering from a move. Look for us in May. |
|
Mensa Dining Adventure
Culinaro's
in Boca Raton was the gathering place last month for diners with a
penchant for Greek food. This restaurant is among the shops along
Wharfside, so we had a view of water. Attending were Tammy Tamir,
husband Raz Galili and baby Yotam, their friends, Micki and Val, Barry
Karas, Deborah Watson, Don and Pat Spero, Clark and Julie, Bob Dolson,
Kay Skoog, and Elissa Rudolph. A great time was had by nearly everyone!
Join us for May's Mensa Dining Adventure in Delray Beach at Mia Mensa. See calendar for details. |

Sample CultureQuest questions (from past CQs)
Elissa Rudolph and Ed Gross
1.
Two of the best-known dramas of 1950s TV were "Requiem for a
Heavyweight" and "Marty." Provide the writer/author, the star, and the
anthology show on which each appeared.
2. Which two famous men died on April 23, 1616?
3. Express the decimal number 429 in (a) binary, and (b) hexadecimal.
4. To what city
would you go to see the major collection of works by each of the
following artists: (a) Hieronymous Bosch; (b) Salvador Dali; (c)
Vincent Van Gogh; (d) Maurits Escher; and (e) James McNeil Whistler?
If you get 3 out of 4 correct, Palm Beach Mensa will pay for your dinner when you attend a First Friday. Email Elissa (elissa12@bellsouth.net)
with your answers. And if you get them all correct, you not only get a
free dinner, you get to be on the next CultureQuest team! Actually you
can be on the team no matter what, even if you don't know any answers.
Just let Ed Gross (mistered3600@cs.com) know you want to be part of CultureQuest XIII. |
