Many of your e-mail addresses are out-of-date according to bounce messages that I got shortly after sending a message to you. Or you may be new to computing and the Internet. For whatever reason, I would like to update the PBC Mensa e-mail address list. Please note that our e-mail list is completely separate from that of National and we only use your addresses for PBC Mensa business. The people at National know absolutely nothing about an e-mail address or change unless you give me permission to notify them.
Please send your e-mail address information to me (bkaras@mindspring.com) and entitle it "E-mail address." Thank you.
Barry Karas

Searching for....New Editor ! This volunteer position is one of many in Palm Beach Mensa and American Mensa. You can join an elite corps of editors across the U.S. and find out how Mensa really works. No kidding! Call Barry 561-964-4360 or Elissa 561-496-0124 if you want to be part of the in-crowd.

Extra spaces this month are due to "interim" editor's love of wide open spaces. But if YOU are editor, you can fill the spaces with your ideas!

Here is the Club Med SIG update for the April newsletter (calendar):(the last one!)

7:20 P.M. Saturday, April 20

Meet the Club Med SIG in Cancun by the Hostess Desk for dinner, or for the whole week! If you haven't found a cheap flight yet, check the Internet for last-minute specials. For a free newsletter with all the details, e-mail Erica Byrne at EMByrne@attglobal.net . Single and/or unaccompanied vacationers are especially welcome.

Thank you, Erica Byrne, Club Med SIG Coordinator, M#1042370, American Mensa, San Francisco

Welcome to MENSA's Club Med SIG.

If you like to waterski, sail, windsurf, and socialize with fun and active Mensans, this is the SIG for you.

When are we going? Mark your calendar for April 20-27, 2002.

Where are we going? Cancun Club Med, on the Yucatan peninsula in eastern Mexico.

Who's invited? American Mensa members, International members, friends of members, and prospective members. The average age range at this Club is 25 to 45 and the minimum age is 18.

Why Club Med? Club Med was originally designed for young, active singles. It is still the best resort for people who want to take a vacation without having to find someone else to bring along. Unaccompanied travelers are matched with a same-sex, same-age roommate (if desired). At meals, diners are seated in groups of eight, so you'll meet seven new people at every meal. If you want to practice your Spanish or French, ask for a Spanish or French table. Group sports lessons provide another great way to meet new friends. Nobody is lonely at Club Med. Best of all, all lessons, sports equipment, and meals are included in one (reasonable) price.

How will I know who the other Mensans are? If your intelligence is not self-evident, wear your Mensa-logo clothing. We'll gather ten minutes before dinner at 7:20 P.M. near the Hostess desk so that we can be seated together. We'll also have a Mensa palapa on the wind-surfing beach during the day.

What is the cost? After March 4, the cost is $138 per night, although there will probably be some last-minute Internet specials that include a good deal on last-minute flights. Check the Club Med web page at www.ClubMed.com under "Great Deals".

Flights during the week tend to be less expensive than weekend flights, so if you plan to arrive a day or two early, meet us on Friday night as usual.

What about SCUBA? SCUBA dive trips are offered at an additional charge by the Excursions Office.

I've never been to Mexico and I've never been to Club Med. Where can I get more information? Visit Club Med's web-site at www.clubmed.com or call 1-800-Club-Med. You'll need a birth certificate or passport to return to the U.S. Ask your doctor if you need any immunizations. Club Med will send you a detailed packet of information when you make your reservation. Please feel free to email me at EMByrne@attglobal.net with any additional questions.

$2,000 Awaits Winners of Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition

To Ponder...

Major difference between men and women: Women talk face to face, men talk side to side, i.e., sitting at a bar, watching a football game on TV, etc. Do you agree, not agree?? Is communication better, worse or about the same when people converse side to side?? How important is body language, facial expressions, which, if you are communicating side to side, are not apparent. Email opinions to Elissa at elissa12@bellsouth.net. Results of informal poll next month.

The Tenth Story - RVC Update

Elissa Rudolph

Ah! Spring and the snowbirds return home and we turn on the AC here in south Florida.

If you've renewed your membership there will be no break in the receipt of this newsletter. If you are reading a friend's newsletter because you didn't renew, perhaps you'll now send in that $49. We welcome our lapsed members back with nary a scolding word.

Plan on spending Memorial Day (May 24-27) weekend at Tampa Bay's RG held again at "that Parrotplace" (http://www.thatparrotplace.com/). The theme is "All America Weekend," so wear or be red, white, and blue. Show those colors that don't run! See you there!

Regional spotlight this month is on Tallahassee Mensa based in and around our state's capital. A small group with under 100 members, this group sends out MenTally, one of the few Mensa newsletter titles that actually allude to our one common shared element. They are struggling along searching for new events and a regular place to meet. Most small groups (and some larger ones!) have been through cycles where it was difficult to fill a calendar with interesting events and find the hosts to organize them. If any of you in Region 10 have suggestions for Tallahassee, email their locsec Judith Lammert (tnkrlammert@mindspring.com). She'd be glad to hear from you! If we can share our successes with each other, no group ever has to feel alone.

May 24-27, Tampa Bay Bash, same hotel as last year, www.thatparrotplace.com ; or Sylvia Zadorozny, szadorozny@aol.com

July 3-7, AG 2002: Desert Delights in Scottsdale, AZ. Don't miss Mensa's biggest gathering of the year! Something for everyone-just check out your latest Bulletin.

October 18-20, the 2002 SCAM Rollback RG, http://spacecoastareamensa.tripod.com/ , for details as they emerge.

Get out those calendars to plan your vacation time!

Notes From the Underground

Barry Karas

NINEELEVEN. It's been over six months since that infamous day (to borrow from FDR). How have our lives changed? My life hasn't changed that much. No wonder. I live alone and don't really work, so my interaction with other people is fairly limited. I have noticed that people, in general, are more aware of their surroundings. And I am more wary of our government. When it is very popular, it is very easy for one or more nefarious people in government to impose destructive policies and/or their own agendas.

MEMBERSHIP. We are group number 334. Coincidentally there are 334 members of PBC Mensa. Our growth is very good: a year ago, we didn't have 300 members; we've grown by over 10%. THANK YOU!

New members are Muffett Brinkman of West Palm Beach and Matthew Mounts of Wellington. Members who moved in to our territory are Daniel Besson (West Palm Beach), Geoffrey Etherington II (Jupiter), Robert Lloyd (Boca Raton), Elizabeth Magno (Palm City), Paula Ryan (Palm Springs), and Harold Teeple (Palm City). Welcome back to Abby Knott and Jay Neutzler, who reinstated their memberships.

COLLOQUIUM. For those of you who are looking for an "intellectual" event, you might want to consider the Colloquium being held in Troy, MI during the weekend of August 16-18, 2002. You can get more information by going to the website <www.colloquium2002.org> or by contacting Dr. Deborah Gleason at (248) 852-5158 or deborahgleason@hotmail.com.

PR. Mensa made the national teevee show, "Good Morning America" during February. It seems as if some Mensans mentioned Mensa's involvement with the Oscar-nominated movie, "A Beautiful Mind." That same morning the Oscar nominations were announced. This fortuitous coincidence led to the two Mensans being interviewed extensively during a weather segment.

CULTURE QUEST (CQ XIII). On the 28th of this month Mensa is going to have the thirteenth occurrence of CQ. This is a national trivia competition that makes many of the questions in the NTN trivia (in my opinion) look like child's play. We usually do, er, not-so-great - but we have a lot of laughs. Ed Gross, our team captain, will lead us into a lot of laughs - and perhaps a better performance.

PERSONAL DATA QUESTIONNAIRE (PDQ). A new edition of the PDQ is currently being distributed and is on national Mensa's website: http://www.us.mensa.org/ . Please complete it. Although you can request that much of the information not be published, I encourage you to make your phone numbers and e-mail addresses known at least to us here in PBC Mensa.

Member News and Updates

Glen Moulder and Elissa Rudolph

As of 2/28/02, we have 334 members, same as our group number of 334. What does this signify? What do you think??

Don't forget to renew your membership!!

Please note: If you don't see your birthday shown in this section when it should appear, you probably indicated to the national office that this information should be withheld. If so, and you do want it to appear, simply contact the national office and change your information withholding preferences.

March Events Review

Northern Exposure

The North County Gathering (NCG) was held at Round Island Park. We kayaked for 4 hours stopping on an island for a picnic lunch. Those attending were Bobbie & Julius Kadlecz, Laura Bulawski, Janice Johnson, Alan Posner, Mike Purcell, Sharon Robertson and Jennifer & Bill Whitesell.

Crab House Breakfast

Glen Moulder

We're getting a good, steady crowd coming out to the Crab House for our monthly breakfast. The group consists of Mensans, non-Mensans and guests and we always have stimulating and enjoyable conversations. If you're looking for a little thought-provoking, but mostly unstructured discussion and some good breakfast, come on out and join us at the Crab House in Jupiter.

First Friday - at Colucci's Attic

No report received this month.

Perkophiles - Glen Moulder

Perkophiles took a hiatus in March, since I've recently moved and have been trying to get all my things organized. Check the calendar to see when it will be in April. I'm moving it to be at the Crab House also, so we'll be there twice a month.

Sample CultureQuest questions (from past CQs)

Elissa Rudolph and Ed Gross

1. Two of the best-known dramas of 1950s TV were "Requiem for a Heavyweight" and "Marty." Provide the writer/author, the star, and the anthology show on which each appeared.

2. Which two famous men died on April 23, 1616?

3. Express the decimal number 429 in (a) binary, and (b) hexadecimal.

4. To what city would you go to see the major collection of works by each of the following artists: (a) Hieronymous Bosch; (b) Salvador Dali; (c) Vincent Van Gogh; (d) Maurits Escher; and (e) James McNeil Whistler?

If you get 3 out of 4 correct, Palm Beach Mensa will pay for your dinner when you attend a First Friday. Email Elissa (elissa12@bellsouth.net) with your answers. And if you get them all correct, you not only get a free dinner, you get to be on the next CultureQuest team! Actually you can be on the team no matter what, even if you don't know any answers. Just let Ed Gross (mistered3600@cs.com) know you want to be part of CultureQuest XIII.
