It's a short
month, so news items are short too. Last month PBCM tested five
candidates ranging in age from 16 to more than that. Three of the
candidates said they were there on a dare from a friend, a local M.
Wonder what the payoff was...

- Many of your
e-mail addresses are out-of-date according to bounce messages that I
got shortly after sending a message to you. Or you may be new to
computing and the Internet. For whatever reason, I would like to update
the PBC Mensa e-mail address list. Please note that our e-mail list
is completely separate from that of National and we only use your
addresses for PBC Mensa business. The people at National know absolutely nothing about an e-mail address or change unless you give me permission to notify them.
- Please send your e-mail address information to me (bkaras@mindspring.com) and entitle it "E-mail address." Thank you.

Rumor has it that
a large Chicago hotel chain is thinking of using the Mensa name in its
advertising. How, I wonder--smart people stay at ABC hotel? Smart
people voted ABC Hotel's beds best? Impress your business
acquaintances--choose ABC Hotel for your next corporate power
lunch/meeting??

The Tenth Story - RVC Update
Elissa Rudolph
It's the shortest
month, but has the most interesting holidays: Groundhog Day (watching a
rodent watching his shadow? C'mon!), Valentine's Day (feel obligated to
send a Valentine? Blame Hallmark!), President's Day (earmarked for all
presidents, only because we don't want to ignore Abe or George or John
or Grover or Millard or any of the others). You can say that February
is not boring, a little over the top on holidays, but not boring.
Speaking of boredom,
here are a few ideas to chase those winter blues away. Renew your
membership early! You will have already received your renewal
package-find it and get your dues in early. March 31 falls on a Sunday
this year, so if you want your membership to be continuous, you need to
be sure your renewal in the National Office by Friday, March 29. Or
just renew on line! How easy!
CultureQuest® XIII
is coming, planned for April 28 this year. You can join CQ Classic or
CQ:The Next Generation (age 17 or under) and have fun stretching your
brain on a Sunday afternoon along with Mensans across the U.S. Think of
all those neurons snapping and sparking! Your LocSec and Editors all
received full information on CQ XIII.
Regional Spotlight this month is on Central Florida Mensa located in and around Orlando. This group had an RG, Smarti Gras
at the end of January, but I can't tell you how good it was because I
haven't been there yet! (It's early January as I write this.) Their
January newsletter, The Flame, had a compelling banner across
it-"Please destroy this newsletter!!" You were to rip off the back
cover because it was a registration form for the RG. Very clever. With
more than 420 members, Central Florida is the second largest group in
Region 10. Keep up the good work, Central Florida Smarties!!
Coming events:
May 24-27, Tampa Bay Bash, same hotel as last year, www.thatparrotplace.com ; or Barbara Loewe, 813-9683343, bloewe@juno.com

Notes From the Underground
Barry Karas
PRIVACY. Before the
events of September 11th occurred, most people felt strongly that we
should preserve whatever privacy we have left. After those events, it
seems that many people are willing to give up their privacy (or what's
left of it) if by doing so, it aids the war on terrorism. How do you
feel about this?
RENEWALS AGAIN. It's
dues paying time. On the fourth of January the renewal statements were
mailed to those members whose renewal payments are due. (Members who
are on multi-year dues plans whose payments are not required and Life
Members were not sent statements.) Mensa makes it easy for you to pay
our dues: payments can be made by regular postal mail, telephone ((817)
607-0060 x 199), fax ((817) 649-5232), and online at the U.S. Mensa web
page (www.us.mensa.org/ , and click on "Renew Your Membership Online"). The dues are $49.00 per year.
Consider a multi-year
plan. Dues for a three year membership are $130.00 (instead of $147.00
by the annual pay method - a savings of over 11%). Dues for a five year
membership are $215.00 (instead of $245.00 by the annual pay method - a
savings of over 12%).
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
("NOM COM"). Non Com representatives find and encourage candidates for
national offices and then vote for nominations. There is one member
from each chapter. There are two meetings held at the 2002 annual
gathering. If you are interested, please contact me (964-4360 or bkaras@mindspring.com).
HEY GOOD LOOKIN'. The recently released movie, A Beautiful Mind, has a sample IQ test on its website. Go to www.abeautifulmind.com
and click on the link, "Exercise your Mind," and follow the
instructions to the IQ test. Why is this so significant? Because
there's credit given to Mensa...and it was developed by a Mensan. Mensa
has been receiving many inquiries about this. So in a way, you're movie
stars. (Okay, it's a bit of a stretch, but don't blame me for trying.)
DISCOUNT. One of the
AMC members missed her flight to Palm Beach International Airport for
the meeting on Nov. 30th. Instead she got on a plane for Ft.
Lauderdale. There she rented a Hertz car. She got an excellent rate
with her Mensa discount.
ANNIVERSARY. Mensa
will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2006. Should it be
celebrated in the U.S. or Great Britain? How should it be celebrated? |

Member News and Updates
Glen Moulder and Elissa Rudolph
As of 12/30/01, we
have 317 (!) members, 7 renewing after more than one year, 1 who moved
in from Aventura, and one brand new member. Welcome back to those
who've been gone awhile. And welcome to the "new to our group" members.
We look forward to meeting you for the first time, or renewing our
acquaintance!
At the end of
December, American Mensa has 46,837 members (45,687 in December of last
year). As reported by the National Office, direct requests for
information are on the rise. It could be due to several unique
placements of the Mensa name, i.e., the film, A Beautiful Mind. Or it could be due to the fact that January is always a good time to start something new.
Please note: If you
don't see your birthday shown in this section when it should appear,
you probably indicated to the national office that this information
should be withheld. If so, and you do want it to appear, simply contact
the national office and change your information withholding preferences. |

Crab House Breakfast
Glen Moulder
January's breakfast
was pleasant with bright sunshine and plenty of good company. Your
reporter highly recommends this activity for those who like having a
good meal at a reasonable price and enjoys discussing current events. |

First Friday - at Chesterfield's
Elissa Rudolph
The First Friday of 2002 was well attended by .....quite a few Mensans. You know who you were/are... |
|
Henry's - Elissa Rudolph
Great
group at Henry's in Delray Beach last month. Bob and Ann Abbott from
Jupiter, Clark Marks and Julie Peterson, Barry Karas, John Swick,
Carole Seuling, Sharron Ronco, Kathy Hickok, and Elissa Rudolph
attended. Food was good, company was better! Join us sometime and/or
suggest a favorite restaurant of yours. Carole suggested the Red Cyclo
Vietnamese restaurant for February and the Abbotts suggested March's
place. |
|
Perkophiles - Glen Moulder
This event has proven to be popular
and entertaining, but since your host is moving north to Jupiter way,
will be suspended in March and will resume in April in a new location.
Anyone want to host a regular event in West Palm? |

Sample CultureQuest questions (from past CQs)
Elissa Rudolph and Ed Gross
1.
Two of the best-known dramas of 1950s TV were "Requiem for a
Heavyweight" and "Marty." Provide the writer/author, the star, and the
anthology show on which each appeared.
2. Which two famous men died on April 23, 1616?
3. Express the decimal number 429 in (a) binary, and (b) hexadecimal.
4. To what city would you go
to see the major collection of works by each of the following artists:
(a) Hieronymous Bosch; (b) Salvador Dali; (c) Vincent Van Gogh; (d)
Maurits Escher; and (e) James McNeil Whistler?
If you get 3 out of 4 correct, Palm Beach Mensa will pay for your dinner when you attend a First Friday. Email Elissa (elissa12@bellsouth.net)
with your answers. And if you get them all correct, you not only get a
free dinner, you get to be on the next CultureQuest team! Actually you
can be on the team no matter what, even if you don't know any answers.
Just let Ed Gross (mistered3600@cs.com) know you want to be part of CultureQuest XIII. |
