News and Notices

Our own Palm-Mensa Web site has been nominated by Mensa's Publications Recognition Program (PRP) in the electronic media category for its coverage of local group information. Can Glen do it again??

Our Plans

Oh, what a great time we had! A planning meeting took place last month with RVC Karen Lary in attendance. We solicited ideas from the group for how to continue the management of PBAM and how to stimulate more interest in a variety of events.

On an interim basis, Elissa Rudolph and Amy Shaughnessy will produce a brief newsletter. But we need regular volunteers for both of these positions. There is a lot of experience in this chapter, so advice and assistance are in ready supply. If you are interested in either position, please call Glen, Elissa, or Barry. For the editorship, you need computer skills & Web access; to be circulation manager, you need to pick up the newsletter at the printer's, ready it for mailing and take it to the post office. All instructions are on our Web site; or you could assist Amy this summer (see below). Another chapter position to be filled is program manager to coordinate possible locations and speakers. During our meeting many great topics for speakers were discussed, and we even have offers of meeting locations. What we need is a coordinator. Interested? Talk to those above.

The energy generated by this meeting was phenomenal! Thanks to Karen, Buz & Shirley Smuckler, Charna Lazar, Laura Michaels, Bill Whitesell (by phone), William Cummings, Glen, Barry, and Amy for their input and advice.

A Little Bit of Help Needed

I volunteered to be the Circulation Manager for our group's newsletter on an interim basis. It's not a big or onerous job (I hope!), but I do want to solicit some assistance, both to keep down my workload and to ensure that one or two other people know how to do it, in case I'm not able to.

I would therefore like to hear from one or two people who can work with me for a few hours one day or evening after the 20th of June, or of July, or August, etc. We could get together at my home in Palm Beach, or at the West Palm Beach Library, or wherever would be mutually convenient. Please give me a call at 659-3620 or e-mail me at aesdth@yahoo.com if you'd like to help out. Thanks, Amy Shaughnessy

Member Laura Michaels is interested in getting a science fiction group going in Palm Beach County. If any local members are interested in SF, they can check
http://www.gopbi.com/community/groups/pbsf/ for more information. She's also interested in writing, gardening (mostly herbs), singing and has an online writers' mailing list at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ficlique.

From around the region...

I just got back from a visit with Palm Beach County Mensa. Our planning meeting seemed to generate a lot of positive energy and I enjoyed the visit. I also attended the first meeting of the 2002 RG Committee for Central Florida Mensa. We have lots of volunteers, a weekend (Jan 25-27), a hotel contract, and a theme - "Heart of Florida's Smarti Gras." (Go ahead and make fun if you like - it was my suggestion). I will be in Tallahassee next weekend for a planning meeting, and at the Busch Bash RG in Tampa for Memorial Day. I hope to see some of y'all soon!

Member News and Updates

Elissa Rudolph/Glen Moulder

As of 4/30/01, Palm Beach County Mensa lost 65 members, gained 4, and now totals 255. We expect that some of those 65 were in the limbo-land of late renewals.

And, hey, isn't time we recognized Martin, St. Lucie & Okeechobee counties? Our Bylaws need to be amended. Anyone interested??

Please note: If you don't see your birthday shown in this section when it should appear, you probably indicated to the national office that this information should be withheld. If so, and you do want it to appear, simply contact the national office and change your information withholding preferences.

April/May Events Review

Culture R Us - Elissa Rudolph

Palm Beach Mensa, AKA, the Sad Sacks, took part in CultureQuest XII at the end of April. Team Captain, Ed Gross, led our group through 90 extremely tough questions (examples below) including identifying outlines of countries or islands. And not the Russian republics either! At least I don't think so.... We did not finish the 90 questions, but got to a point at about question 53 when we realized we had only a few minutes until time was up (90 minutes for the 90 questions). So we did what any test taker would do--we guessed! No points off for wrong answers.

CultureQuest is a test of a person's cultural knowledge, which includes
Mensa, of course. Questions on CQ XII...

World-famous architect who served as Mensa's honorary president?

Who is considered American Mensa's founder, served as its first secretary &
hosted the first meeting at his home in September 1960?

Current names of these major U.S. corporations:

U.S. Steel
Kresge
The Haloid Company
Standard Oil of New Jersey

Scientists recently named a new species of dinosaur in honor of a recording
artist. Name the recording artist.

Which president built bowling lanes in the West Wing basement?

Anyone know the answers? Our team knew some, but not all. If you know the
any of these answers, please email me for a prize elissa12@bellsouth.net

First Friday at Chesterfield's - Elissa Rudolph

Local Chapter Dines with Grandmother

Our steady play-date at Chesterfield's in Delray Beach brought out Shawn Bennett, Kay Skoog, Barry Karas, Glen Moulder, Pamela Berteau, Jerry and Merrell Fortner, Lya Korda, Blossom and Ray Meyerson, Bob Dolson, and Elissa Rudolph. This time we were seated in an area much like your grandmother's dining room and with such a convivial group our dinner was a great success. Here's to more Chesterfield-experiences! The restaurant is in the process of renovating and changing its persona; next time you read our First Friday report, it may be coming from "The Britannia"!

Breakfast at the Crab House - Glen Moulder

In May, I hosted my first Crab House breakfast, temporarily taking over the hosting from Rich Linett. Attending were Bob and Ann Abbott, Linda Madison, Pam Berteau and me. We discussed everyone's travel plans in the near future and places that we had been in the past or would like to go to someday. Come on out and tell us where you've been!

MensAdventure! - Elissa Rudolph

Mensa Group Closes Restaurant

In Delray Beach's new Pineapple Grove area, there's a new restaurant, The Annex, serving traditional American food. Our Mensadventure for May took us there to savor old Florida charm, decently prepared edibles, and not-so-bad prices. Philip Kapp, Sharron Ronco, Glen Moulder, Pamela Berteau, Bob Dolson, and Elissa Rudolph enjoyed the conviviality of the venue--slow ceiling fans, pale yellow walls, quiet conversation--and closed the place down at 9:30pm. Apparently it's a big breakfast-brunch place on Saturday, so we were leaving just as some of the serving help was heading home. If you're in the area, check it out. Pineapple Grove continues to improve and it's within a short walk of glitzy Atlantic Avenue.

 Perkophiles - Glen Moulder

The May Perkophiles was the last one I'll be holding at Einstein Brothers. Nothing against the place really, but it's just a little too noisy and non-conducive to hearing others speak (plus, they don't have milk!). From June on, we'll be at E. R. Bradley's in West Palm Beach at the foot of Clematis Street on the Intracoastal Waterway on Flagler.

We had a small but interesting group consisting of the ever-delightful Linda Madison, multi-talented Shawn Bennett, Jim Moore, a long-time Mensan and realtor who's moving to our area from Chicago, Leslie Kavchak, our motorcycle-ridin' Palm Beach architect and lastly, your faithful scribe. Didn't solve any of the world's problems, but we sure gave it a try. Come on out and help us and maybe we'll evolve into a higher life form!

NORTH COUNTY GATHERING - Bill Whitesell

The May North County Gathering was held at Norris's. Those attending were Laura Bulawski Mike Purcell, Bobbie Kadlecz, Scott Curtis, Janice Johnson, Alan Posner, Brook Westover and Donna & David Bognar. In June we'll be at Manitiki Restaurant in Fort Pierce on Saturday 6/16/01 @ 6:30 PM. RSVP to me for directions.
