News and Notices

Good news (and bad for some). Mindgames 2001 is sold out! It is full! No more registrations are being taken, but there is a waiting list. Details are available through the national Mensa web site. Contact the registrar for more information or to be placed on the list.

Member Laura Michaels is interested in getting a science fiction group going in Palm Beach County. If any local members are interested in SF, they can check
http://www.gopbi.com/community/groups/pbsf/ for more information. She's also interested in writing, gardening (mostly herbs), singing and has an online writers' mailing list at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ficlique.

In February, 2000, author and local member, Bob Abbott, published a puzzle column in Palm-Mensa. He received no responses from anyone. Not from anyone in our group, nor anyone else on the internet. Last month (over a year later), he got two responses. Bob sent this message to the two respondents. "This is strange. Over a year ago, February 2000, I had a puzzle in the on-line Palm Mensa newsletter. No one sent in a solution. Now just in the last week, TWO people sent in solutions, and one of them is in England. Where did you guys see the newsletter? Was there a mention of it somewhere?"

Jon H. (from the UK) recently sent back "I was shown Theseus and the Minotaur by a friend. I've had a go at them on and off, but one maze I couldn't crack was Maze 8. So I did a Yahoo search to see if there was a mention of its difficulty, and found the Feb 2000 Mensa newsletter. I had another go at the maze - and it just clicked. So I sent my solution to Robert Abbott. I went back to the newsletter shortly after, and only then did I notice it was February from LAST year. So I thought no more of it. I guess it's harder than most of the 6x6 puzzles, but once you can tell what's going on, it's OK."

And Giovanni B. responded "I first saw your Theseus puzzle listed in BBSpot's (www.bbspot.com, "Your tech humor source") "Daily Spot" list of interesting and/or amusing links a few months ago. They at first only had your original "maze 14", but a few
days later they had a link to www.logicmazes.com/theseus.html and all 15 mazes. I enjoyed working through them, and a while later when trying to get my 12-year old son to try them out, I did a google search of "theseus maze" or "minotaur maze" or something to see if I could find any discussions of these wonderful puzzles on line, and happened upon the Palm Mensa newsletter. So then I had to go back and re-solve all the mazes to
get the codes and send them to you! Thanks again for the entertaining mazes."

Bob constructs walk-through mazes and has published a number of books about mazes and puzzles, some of which you can find at Amazon or Barnes & Noble, or he will sell them to you directly. Contact Bob at 561.575.4278 or see his web site at http://www.logicmazes.com

RVC Update

Karen Lary

Since Mensa celebrates its fiscal new year on April 1st, I'd like to wish you each a "Happy New Mensa Year!"

At a time when most membership organizations around the country continue to
see their membership numbers drop, Mensa continues to grow. With 47,427
members at the end of February, we have already surpassed the number at the
end of last fiscal year. Considering the dues increase this year, the forecast was for a growth rate of 2.5% and we are right on track. And, because I know you are wondering, Region 10 currently has 3176 members, an increase of about 8.5% since September.

I had hoped to have the names of the candidates for RVC of region 10 by now,
but we have not gotten the list. I know of 2 petition candidates who were
collecting signatures, but it would be premature for me to mention names
until they have been officially approved.

Things have been pretty quiet around the region, except for the annual
"Bikers versus Brainers" trivia competition and fund-raiser held on March
3rd in Naples, FL. Sam and Bunny Sewell of Southwest by South Florida Mensa
arranged the event, in which five members of the local Mensa group competed
with five members of American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE), a
motorcycle club. The Brainers won the fifth annual competition, 66-56
points. In past years, the bikers have defeated the brainers three times.
According to Sam, the event this year raised more than $1,600 for their
scholarship fund (and gained Mensa some great publicity). Great job y'all!

And now the RG/AG notices:

May 25-28, 2001 -- Busch Bash in Tampa. For information, check out the web
site: http://www.sports-pac.com/home/mensa/bash.html or contact Dana Groulx,
5410 Bold Venture Place, Wesley Chapel, FL 33544; (813) 991-7868.

July 4-8, 2001 - AG 2001 "The Annual Gathering" hosted by North Texas Mensa
(Dallas). Contact registrar@ag.us.mensa.org, or the web site at
http://ag.us.mensa.org. If you do not have Internet access, write to Carol
Hilson, AG Co-Chairman, 9413 Shipman St., Rowlett, TX 75088.

Notes From the Underground

LocSec - Barry Karas

E-MAIL ADDRESSES. I got back many "bounces" from a recent e-mailing. If you have gone online or changed Internet Service Providers since September, 2000, please send your new e-mail addresses to me at bkaras@bigfoot.com. Our mailing list is maintained locally, used for Palm Beach County Mensa purposes ONLY. We do not report your address to the National office.

OOPS. In connection with the e-mail bounces I experienced lately, I recently found out that part of the reason may have been due to America Online (AOL), the nation's largest ISP, not accepting e-mail for 10 days from Earthlink, my ISP, the #2 service in the country. Those messages are lost forever somewhere in cyberspace.

MILESTONE. As of the end of February, we had 309 members, exceeding 300 members for the first time.

EDITOR. Glen is retiring as Editor after serving his two-year term as Editor. He did a fantastic job, especially considering that PBC Mensa was the *first* Mensa chapter to put its whole newsletter on the Internet/web - and he won an award for us in the Publications Recognition Program. It is a big job, both in its importance to PBC Mensa and in its scope. Many thanks to Glen.

HOWEVER, this means that we need a new Editor (or editorial team) by May 1st. Since the newsletter is the prime - and usually the only - means of communication, it is absolutely VITAL to our existence. This past month, we crossed a threshold of sorts - we exceeded 300 members. There MUST BE a member or two out there willing to help out.

The job is a big one, and can be very time consuming, especially at the end of the month when the next month's issue is being finalized and printed. However, the job can be divided into discreet parts. The Editor can put together a team to perform different functions, like the calendar, the web site and the printed newsletter.

PLEASE contact me (964-4360 or e-mail <bkaras@bigfoot.com>) if you are interested in all or a portion of the Editor position.

Member News and Updates

Glen Moulder

First order of business. Last month, I welcomed new member "Swartz Matthew" to our group. This was a mistaken interpretation of Mr. Swartz's name, provided to me by the national office (yikes!) and I hereby offer apology to Mr. Matthew Swartz and a hearty welcome aboard! Thank you, Matthew, for notifying me of the error. Now, on to our April announcements.

On February 28th of this year, PBCM had 312 members, up by 13 from January's total. American Mensa, Ltd. reported membership at 47,427 up by 865 from January. We welcome new members James Pressly, Jr., Cherry James, Andres Castellanos, Rene Revert, Laura Michaels and Nicolas Joyant. Welcome also to Jerry Fitz, Hubert Elkins and Marjorie Good-Helmling who have moved into our area. And finally, welcome back to Clay Harrow, Gene Donney, Prudence Board, Pitt Maner, III, and Warren Gibson who are reinstating members.

Please note: If you don't see your birthday shown in this section when it should appear, you probably indicated to the national office that this information should be withheld. If so, and you do want it to appear, simply contact the national office and change your information withholding preferences.

March Events Review

First Friday at Chesterfield's - Glen Moulder

In March the First Fridayer's could all sit at one of the big round tables and talk across the table. Pam and I showed our Palm and Handspring PDAs around and introduced everyone to the latest technology in portable computing. The service was a little lacking, but the food was good, the fish and chips portions were huge, and the lady who sang karaoke was very good. FF was attended by our host, Bob Dolson, Elissa Rudolph, Pam Berteau, Barry Karas, Blossom and Ray Meyerson, Sharron Ronco, Margaret McKenzie and me. Hope we'll see you in April.

Breakfast at the Crab House - Glen Moulder

Rich Linett hosted another successful breakfast at the Crab House in March. Rich and Alex Linett, Glen Moulder, Pam Berteau, Bob and Ann Abbott, and Bob and Peg Peyton enjoyed a pleasant breakfast out on the dock. The weather was perfect and the view from the dock of the lighthouse and the inlet is one of the really great pleasures of living in Palm Beach County. We talked about various places we've all lived, where we were born, our favorite places, paleontology, education and the impact of technology on our lives and society.

After the April breakfast, Bob and Ann are inviting the attendees back to their place for canoeing around the lagoon. Come join us for fun and some sun.

Testing...Testing - Elissa Rudolph

Proctor Allardyce Hamill conducted a Mensa testing session in Fort Pierce last month. St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Downtown Fort Pierce will probably be the test site from now on for our northern Mensa candidates. Allardyce did a fantastic job! Thanks!!

MensAdventure! - Elissa Rudolph

Mensadventure at Red, Hot & Blue

Last month, we enjoyed a casual dinner on the porch of Red, Hot & Blue, home of the original Memphis Pit Bar-B-Q, in Delray Beach. The air temperature was perfect for dining al fresco and the ambience, despite the construction aura (the Federal Highway & Linton Blvd. intersection is currently undergoing renovation), was pleasant. In attendance were Rita Prangle, Glen Moulder, Pamela Berteau, Sharron Ronco, Carole Seuling, Richard, Karen and Maggie Haney, Allen Posner, Janice Johnson, Bob Dolson, and Elissa Rudolph. Visitor from North Jersey Mensa, Jim Gelman, also joined the crowd.

Mensadventure would like to move around the chapter so that all of our members have a dinner event in their neighborhood. If you have suggestions for this "moving feast," please let Elissa know (elissa12@bellsouth.net or 561-272-0475). We'll bring dinner to your neighborhood!

Book Talk - Glen Moulder

On March 24th, we met at Sharry Israel's home to hear author and American Mensa member Joan Shore speak about her book "Saging - How to Grow Older and Wiser." Her book is about growing older (growing up), which we all do from the moment we're born, and which is very different from growing old (growing down). Joan proposes nine pointers that can guide us on the way; simplicity, curiosity, humor, optimism, tolerance of others (because maybe the word love can be mistrued), honesty, courage, dignity and faith. She also coins a new word -- SAGING -- that expresses the joy of growing older and wiser.

Attending were Sharry, her friend Barbara, Bob Dolson, Elissa Rudolph, Glen Moulder, Pam Berteau, Carole Seuling, Bettye Pfau, Charna Lazar, Dave Accetta and our author Joan.

After Joan's talk, we discussed her ideas and then enjoyed refreshments provided by our hostess. A big thank you to Sharry and Joan for an enlightening and entertaining evening!

 Perkophiles - Glen Moulder

Whew! March Perkophiles was well-attended by Linda Madison, Bettye Pfau, Bob and Peg Peyton, Rich and Alex Linett and their friend Shirley, Pam Berteau, me, and a fellow named David from Wellesley, Massachusetts whose table we commandeered. The conversation was lively and noisy and we could not get a single conversational focus going on. Richard, of course, entertained us with many questions and everyone enjoyed themselves. I've got to find another place to host this event though, since Einstein's is way too noisy and crowded.

NORTH COUNTY GATHERING - Bill Whitesell

The March North County Gathering was held at Norris' in Stuart. We had a nice turnout and saw some new and long-missed faces. Those attending were Barry Karas, Mike Purcell, Heather Granger, Bobbie and Julius Kadlecz, Laura Bulawski, Donna and David Bognar, Bob and Ann Abbott, Arthur Cooper, Rita Prangle and Jennifer and Bill Whitesell.

Personal Biographies of AMC Committee Member Candidates

Glen Moulder

Certain candidates for AMC Committee positions have sent campaign materials to us, requesting that we publish them in our newsletter. We will do so, stating that Palm Beach County Mensa is impartial and does not endorse or support the campaign for any particular candidate. All candidates for AMC positions are welcome to submit materials for us to publish, which will be done with NO editing except to create web links as appropriate and make references to them in the text. Materials will be published in the order that they were received chronologically.

Allan Neuner - for Chair

Hello. I'm Allen Neuner, past Ombudsman of American Mensa. As you may already know, this is an election year for American Mensa. This coming April, you will be asked to vote for those who, for the next two years, will be running our organization to the best of their abilities. The decisions they make will affect not only you for right now but all Mensans and for years to come. That's why I'm urging you, when you receive your election materials in the April/May issue of the Mensa Bulletin, to read over the candidate statements, mark your ballots carefully, and mail in your vote.

Why am I writing to you about this? Partly because I believe in the responsibility of every member to cast his or her ballot and exercise his or her say in the running of Mensa. And partly because I am running for the office of Chairman. I believe it's time to turn Mensa away from the business of mandating "one size fits all" solutions to the local groups and members, and away from the business of the explosive proliferation of rules and regulations. It's time to turn Mensa back towards the business of listening to the members' concerns and utilizing the members' intelligence and imagination to come up with workable responses to those concerns. I believe that my 23 years in Mensa, which include terms as national Ombudsman, Local Secretary, proctor, and RG co-chairman, give me the experience and communication abilities needed to turn Mensa in this direction. I would like your vote for Chairman.

Mensa's strengths have always been the diversity of its members and the power of their minds. Mensa has always been whatever its members have conceived it to be.

Tony Jackowski - for Chair

Dear Fellow Member of Mensa:

PLEASE DON'T READ THIS IF...

...you are getting all that you want or need out of Mensa. BUT...

...if you not only enjoy the social aspects of Mensa (AGs, RGs, SIGs, and parties), but feel that our organization can, and should, be just a little bit more, then read on! Please.

My name is Tony Jackowki, and I have been a member of Mensa for nearly 17 years, and I am running for Chairman. In November of last year I became a Life Member because I believe in the future of this organization. During my years of membership I have held numerous elected positions (locally, nationally, and internationally), performed many tasks (1991 Annual Gathering Co-Chairman, InterLoc Editor, IBD member, 2nd Vice-Chairman AMC, and RVC7), and chaired or been a part of committees too numerous to list here. (Please look over the resume on my web site for complete details of my contributions to our Organization). I hope you will agree that my experience more than qualifies me for the office of Chairman. In fact, in the recent nominating process, more members of the Nominating Committee voted in favor of my nomination for Chairman than any other candidate. (They like me...they really like me!)

While it is good to know that the members of the NomComm have placed their trust in my abilities, I want you to know that you can believe in me as well. I have a very strong track record. When I accept a task or position I tackle it with both enthusiasm and diligence, and I follow through on all my undertakings. As Chairman, I would like to direct this energy towards making Mensa a social organization with a conscience. I support MERF and our Gifted Children's Programs, and believe that Mensa needs to become more involved in our communities and schools. Our future members will come from these activities.

I am also concerned for the health of Mensa. We seem to be on a path to becoming an organization where disrespect for one another are the rule rather than the exception. I want to change this direction before it's too late. When elected Chairman I will stress respect, tolerance and understanding as qualities I expect form all Mensa leadership. And what better way than leading by example. I expect to focus the work of the AMC on setting policy based on what is best for the whole membership by listening, and more importantly, hearing what the members expect from their organization.

I invite you to join me at the round table, where your voice will be heard. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss my campaign, my philosophy or my vision for Mensa. Together, we can begin the rebuilding of Mensa -- a Mensa where we embrace our uniqueness and share it with others -- a Mensa where all members will be proud to say they belong.

BECOME MORE THAN JUST A MEMBER -- BECOME AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN THE FUTURE OF MENSA.

Jean K. Becker, Ph.D. - for Chair

The campaign statements that run in the Bulletin have to be short and don't allow me to really tell you about my experience, or what I would do, if you retain me as your Chair. If you feel you already know me through our recent Mensa contacts, great! But if you want more information for your readers, or if others in your local group ask you about the candidates, here is a more detailed picture of my volunteer background.

I have enclosed a resume [Ed. - Not included here] of my activities in Mensa. It is "just the facts"-many small projects are lumped together into families and short-term jobs are not listed. But I think you will notice several things:

  • I am the only candidate for Chairman who is current with the issues facing American Mensa today, especially in the crucial international arena
  • I have included dates with my volunteer activities
  • I am the only candidate elected by the members to a nationwide AMC position
  • I have held a wide variety of Mensa positions with a steady progression of responsibility, "working my way up" based on my performance in each previous job
  • In the past two terms as Second and First Vice Chair, I have had the opportunity to really get to know "the big picture"

I'll bet some people are wondering why I did not submit my name to the (National) Nominating Committee (NomCom) as Chairman. The reason is simple. When the NomCom met last year, I submitted my name as First Vice-Chair (since Bob Beatty was running for reelection) and the NomCom endorsed me for that position, knowing I could become Chairman at any time.

The NomCom allows a candidate to submit for only one position. Because the NomCom had completed it's work and disbanded when Bob resigned, I could not then submit my name for Chairman. I would have been happy to have the NomCom examine my bid for Chairman; the NomCom has endorsed me for every position I have applied for to date. However, I have always also submitted as a petition candidate, and am happy to have the added endorsement of my friends and local group members.

As a leader of your local group, I suspect your next question may be "What is her record about local group support since being on AMC?" Here are some highlights I am proud of:

  • Increased Funding to the Local Groups
  • Suggested giving a "bonus" to local groups for new members
  • Supported National Testing Day and increased testing revenues
  • Helped create the local group "Bootstrap Fund"
  • Proposed a new fund for local group membership and publicity efforts next year
  • Streamlined Local Group Bylaw process
  • Redrafted Site Selection materials and process to make it easier to local groups to bid to host AGs and AMC meetings
  • Wrote a Leadership Retreat Planning Guide and other leadership training materials for local groups to use
  • Coordinated LDW Guidelines, AG Leadership Development Workshops, and wrote or edited forty-two workshop outlines to support new local group volunteers
  • Currently working on improved support to Area Group Coordinators
  • Organizing a strategic planning session at the AG which will include opportunities for local group leaders to participate in setting the course for the next AMC

Here are a few of my other contributions I would like you to know about:

  • Participated in moving the National Office to cut costs and improve service
  • Worked to revive the Colloquium and other intellectual activities
  • Long term supporter of the Gifted Children's program and publication
  • Made nationwide contributions to SIGHT, SIGs, and MERF
  • Created a Life Membership Endowment Plan which will safeguard the fund in perpetuity
  • Known as a team player and consensus builder

The best indicator of how someone will perform in the future is how she has served you in the past. I am offering a clear "track record" for your consideration. As you vote this spring, note that American Mensa is growing, financially sound and currently enjoying the highest renewal rate in twenty years. I am proud to have played a part in making this happen. I hope you will take the time to vote for me as Chair to keep the momentum going.

Please feel free to contact me with questions, ideas or for electronic copy.

 Jonathan C. Elliott - Second Vice-Chairman

I'm writing today to provide you with some additional information regarding my decision to stand as a candidate for AML Second Vice-Chairman.

I did not originally intend to run for this position, nor to run for any position on the AMC until I had first completed some still-pending projects within my local chapter. However, with the decision of past AML Chairman Bob Beatty not to run for office this term, several other candidates decided to
run for positions other than those for which they had originally been nominated by the national Nominating Committee. I was then asked by a committee of Mensa members, representing several local groups from around the country, to be a candidate this year. This was a non-trivial decision,
both because I am still very active in my local group and because I had personally gathered signatures for one of the other candidates in this race. After discussing the question with our chapter's Board of Directors, though, I decided to accept nomination.

Among my qualifications for this position (in addition to my having served as Chairman, Executive Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Calendar Editor, Awards Committee Chair, and Bylaws Committee Chair for my local group) are my multiple ideas for improving the internal operations and finances of American Mensa (several of which ideas have been discussed on the M-Grapevine e-mail
discussion list, where I am known as "The Maestro"), my ability to translate broad ideas into detailed motions, the fresh insights and perspectives that a new person can bring to the AMC, my preference for calm and reasoned discussion over shouting and political backbiting, and my ardent desire for the AMC to serve the needs of local groups and individual members rather
than pass numerous laws to require conformity of all local groups to their centralized standards.

If any of your readers would like to know more about any of my specific ideas, or if they have any other questions about my candidacy, they may feel free to contact me at MaestroJCE@aol.com. In the meantime, I ask that all members interested in improving American Mensa give active consideration to my candidacy in the upcoming election. Thank you very much.

Judy Vasiliauskas - AMC Secretary

My name is Judy Vasiliauskas, but please call me Judy V. Its simpler. I'm running for AMC Secretary because I'd like to help simplify things in Mensa, too; to govern less so members can enjoy Mensa more.

Over the years, I've watched Mensa become more bureaucratized, politicized and complicated. As a former LocSec and Editor myself, I want the AMC to be more responsive to local group needs, to give more of each dues dollar back to the local groups, to create an atmosphere conducive to members and
chapters generating positive ideas. The AMC can help us do those things by listening and by not micromanaging.

By focusing on what's essential to the members and the core operations of American Mensa as a corporation, the AMC can return more money to local groups. By reducing regulations the AMC can encourage our volunteers to explore new approaches. I'd like to see support of member-generated events such as the Leadership Seminar in Amarillo and the Gifted Children Colloquium in Ohio, neither of them sponsored by the AMC because they fell outside the guidelines prescribed by the committees sanctioning them. The AMC's job is to set general policy and to set the members' imaginations free.

So, how can I help make this happen? I'm willing to stand up and point out this vision through my AMC votes. I will vote for those things that are responsive to member needs and creativity and against those that are extensions of the bureaucracy. As Secretary, I'm committed to producing the agendas and minutes rapidly and in language that provides the members a clear snapshot of what is in the works as well as how the AMC voted and why.

I'm an independent, associated with no faction. I just want to have some fun, to feel a sense of worth in the organization and - just as I've simplified my name to Judy V - to simplify things.

For more information visit the campaign web site

You can make a difference with your vote.

Marie Mayer - AMC Secretary

Serving as AMC Communications Officer the last four years has been a rewarding challenge. I've learned much and tried to do what I believed best for Mensa overall, and editors and local groups in particular. Now I'm ready for a new challenge--serving as AMC Secretary. I am enthusiastic, pragmatic, and detail-oriented as well as diligent, hard-working, and innovative. And because I've made mistakes through life, I've also had many "learning opportunities". Although I want to move into a new role with Mensa, I carry with me an important focus of my current role--communication.

While meeting minutes are the legal documentation of meeting decisions, what I believe most members want to know is how those decisions affect them. I intend to use my skills and experience to not only accurately prepare agendas and minutes for AMC meetings but to also find ways to convey to members what actions from those meetings mean to them and their local group. My overall goal is to continue to enhance Mensa for its members and I ask for your vote as
Secretary to help me do so. And, while I continue with the work of Mensa, I will also remember that we must take time to laugh and have fun while we take care of business.

Elissa Rudolph - for RVC 10

Many of the 3,000+ members in new Region 10 hail from somewhere outside of Florida. I am one of "those." However, despite my relatively short time in this state-four years-I will bring to the office of RVC10 a deep commitment to the types of projects, events, and policies that make your Mensa membership something that you treasure. In my more than 25 years as a Mensa member, I have held most every local office at one time or another, have been a member of several different chapters in the northeast, and have been instrumental in helping my home groups become all that they can be. By encouraging the natural talents in every group, we all emerge stronger and better able to enjoy the benefits of our membership. That's what I see for myself and that's what I see for all members. Mensa is for the members: without contented members Mensa is just a Latin name for table.

Ellen Shipman Paul - for RVC 10

My name is Ellen Shipman Paul, and I am a candidate for the office of Regional Vice Chair (RVC) 10. I am writing this as way of introduction to those of you in Region 10 who I don't know, and as a way of greeting to those of you I do. I also write to explain why I chose to run for office and give you a bit of information about myself and my time in Mensa. Our newly formed regional is smaller and better suited to serve its many and varied members. I was pleased when the AMC opted to redraw the regional lines, and to allow those of us tucked furthest in the southeast to have our own region. Given the large number of local groups and members here, it seems a logical choice.

Now that the choice has been made, we have our first chance to choose our own RVC. I have thrown my name in the hat in order to serve Mensa and to provide leadership for the region from someone who has been active in the state of Florida since 1991, and a member of Mensa since 1986. I believe that I should be your choice for RVC 10 for that and other reasons. Not only have I attended many RGs and other Mensa events throughout the Sunshine State, I have gotten to know many members of Region 10 and can, happily, call many of you my friends. I know the needs and desires of this region, am always available to discuss a matter, and have the type of Mensa experience needed in someone who will represent this area.

When telling fellow Mensans about my decision to seek office, many people have been supportive, but curious: why do I wish to serve as RVC 10? I have considered that question, and can best reply that I have gotten a great deal out of belonging to Mensa; I have made good friends, gotten the opportunity to travel and attend interesting events, and done scholarship work on the local and regional levels. I also enjoyed my time as a local group officer (Recording Secretary, Assistant LocSec, and two terms as LocSec). I continue to serve as local scholarship chair, and presently serve both Regions 5 and 10 as Regional Scholarship Chair. Because of the enjoyment and benefits I have gotten from Mensa, the next logical step is to continue both my service and enjoyment at the next level. Additionally, I have years of experience in conflict resolution and consensus decision-making, all of which will enable me to make a positive contribution to the AMC and to my fellow members of Region 10.

Wanted! We are looking for someone who can offer relevant educational commentary on a wide variety of subjects during normal daily after school activities for our 2 boys, Mensa members, aged 6 and 8. We are not looking for a 'tutor' in the classic sense of the word. Except on rare occasions, we do not wish to have specific didactic sessions. However, we would like for our children to learn science, literature, languages, history, math, etc. both in school and during their recreational activities. If you feel that you can assist us in accomplishing these goals, please contact Eric at 561.775.1950.

What if PBCM held an election and nobody came? That's exactly what happened. We published an elections announcement and nomination form in the February newsletter. With over 300 members, not a single person volunteered for any position. There is great concern at the national level about the apathy of Mensa members. I can attest to this here in Palm Beach. Of four elected positions in our group, only three have been filled for the past few years. The people currently serving need to be relieved or need some assistance so they can avoid being burned out. I can't continue with all the publishing activities since it takes too much of my time. If just one person came forward to help, we'd produce a better newsletter and web site. I will continue maintaining the web site, but we really need a new Editor.

Apathy questions concern why more of us don't participate in local or national events or serve as group officers. Membership figures are up, but participation is down. Why is this? One reason may have to do with changes in our society. A couple of decades ago, we feared nuclear war. Now we're afraid of school kids with guns. We used to be more willing to express ourselves and not worry about being politically-correct. Mensa provided a forum for intelligent people to communicate with others at an intellectual level higher than in the local bar. Now, there seems to be a general feeling of distrust of others and it is much harder to be open, to freely share ideas. Another reason may be that many of us are just too darned busy with regular life activities. There seems to always be another thing that must be done, another obligation to be fulfilled. A third reason may have to do with the purpose of Mensa. The AML web page states "Mensa provides intelligent individuals an opportunity to meet other smart people." OK, we've met, now what? Maybe hanging out with other Mensans just isn't enough. There are two factions developing at the national level; those who want to keep Mensa as a social organization, and those who would like to see us provide a service. Maybe it IS time that we consider changing our charter and start doing something with all our intelligence.

The truth is you only get out of Mensa what you're willing to put into it (am I beating the dead horse, here?). There's no library of materials for your perusal, no clubhouse, no one waiting for you to express an interest in something so they can organize an event you might like to come to. If you want it to happen, you've got to make it happen. Don't like food events? How about starting a reading program for children or an adult literacy program? Are you involved in a community or volunteer activity that could use a hand? Ask a few fellow Mensans. Chances are you'll find at least a couple that will come out to help. And, if you want good things to happen in your local group, you can make the difference.
