Palm Beach County Mensa Calendar of Events
April, 2003

Mensa events are open to all Mensans, their spouses, children and guests. Who may or may not attend a private home is at the host's discretion. Hosts: Please mention any special concerns about your location, such as smoking restrictions, limited access for the handicapped, or presence of pets. Guests: If you have any special needs or restrictions, please check with your host before attending an event.

Notice! Our group has merged its calendar with the one from the Broward group and some events from Miami. The icon in the rightmost column of the event indicates what group(s) are hosting that activity (B for Broward, M for Miami, P for Palm Beach County). See the legends at the bottom of this page for an explanation of other icons that may appear in this column. Most phone numbers for Broward events will be area code 954, for Miami, 305.

Sunday, April 6th. MENSA OUTDOOR SIG - A Walk along the Beach in Hollywood. Walk the Broadwalk at a leisurely pace and have breakfast afterward at one of the beachfront cafes. Exit I-95 at Hollywood Blvd., go west to 48th and turn right. Parking lot in back. We meet at 6 pm. to eat and warm up... You can come any time and still get in on any game. Miami Mensa.

Here's another Asian venue to try. . . uncrowded, great food, and, umm, an unusual name! Typical entrees: Kai Pad Hed, Kai Sram Ros, Kai Paradise and the routine Chicken with Garlic, Basil Leaves, Ginger, Broccoli, etc. as well as duck, shrimp, squid, lobster, seafood combinations. 9:00AM "Secrets of the Media." Jim Blackmore, National Marketing Director, reveals how to get the best publicity for your groups & events, what NOT to say or do; how to develop Mensa publicity tools. He will share the Jimmy Kimmel show tape & tell you how it happened.
10:00AM "How to Deal with Problem Members." Ike Kullman, RVC5, discusses the difference between a police matter & what should be handled within Mensa, how to defuse difficult situations, and when formal hearings are utilized.
11:00AM "Mensa & the Community at Large." Bonnie Wilpon, Tampa M, shares her views of community involvement and Mensa, how it can benefit local members, and what it takes to find and align your chapter with community groups.
Noon Lunch on your own
1:30PM "National Contests-Why Should We Bother?" Mystery presenter describes current national contests and the positive results of participation. Don't worry, no one will try to guilt you into getting involved!
2:30PM "Giveaways, Fun Stuff, & What DO You Have in That Box?" Jim Blackmore & his mystery box full of goodies for you! Seriously, Jim will discuss the multitudinous resources the national office can provide for your group to amuse, educate, & infuse your enthusiasm for all things Mensan.
3:30PM "Getting People Involved-How to Get More Volunteers." Janice Johnson Palm Beach County M will explore the reasons people volunteer to begin with, why their priorities might change, where & how to find fresh, enthusiastic volunteers, the importance of feedback & other member-related issues.
5:30PM Dinner at the Rustic Inn, Ravenswood Road-a great casual place on the water, known for its snow crab legs, lobster, and bibs.
This entire day of workshops is free to attendees. Bring your notebooks, your questions, and be prepared to learn, gain confidence, and have fun with your south Florida friends! Email Elissa Rudolph (elissa12@bellsouth.net) to RSVP. We need to know how big a box Jim needs to bring!

Saturday, April 27th. SUNDAY BRUNCH Dr. Dessert's Cafe at 10:00 am. Someplace new and different. A family owned and operated cafe, with all items made fresh daily. The lovely buffet includes waffles, made to order omelets, deli salmon and pastrami, salads, homemade breads, roast beef, turkey, ham and more, juices, coffee and the favorite desserts that are the namesake of this cafe.
