Thursday, November 23rd. Thanksgiving, a federal holiday observed on the fourth Thursday of the month. This holiday originated in ancient times, when our ancestors gave thanks to their god(s) for the harvest. In America, the tradition is commonly believed to have begun in 1621 with a proclamation by Governor Bradford of Plymouth Colony. In modern times, Mrs. Sarah J. Hale urged President Lincoln to proclaim it in 1863. Congress passed legislation officially recognizing the celebration in 1941.

Coming Events - December

Friday, December 1st, 7 PM. First Friday at Chesterfields, 530 S Federal Highway, Delray Beach Celebrate the first Friday of the month at Chesterfields in Delray Beach. We've reserved the Tea Room for an intimate dinner with some of your old Mensa buddies. Drop your Christmas shopping bags, you will never get it all done anyhow. Shepherds Pie at $10 to Surf & Turf for $23 and limited English beer in unlimited quantities. Be prepared for 25% for tax and tip, no plastic, cash only or you will be cleaning the stove. Good food and Mensa camaraderie too! RSVP by Thursday to Bob Dolson at 561-272-0475 (or rdolson@bellsouth.net). Make sure you leave your phone number and if you are bringing a guest.

Saturday, December 9th, 7 PM. Mensa Holiday Party! Meet us at the Woodlake community clubhouse, Delray Beach, for a Holiday Party with friends, food, and fun. We'll play the "Gimme Grabbag" game; rules will be available at the party, but may change even then. We know we're all friends and this is all in good fun. So let's see some real competition! The gift you select may not be the one you go home with! You can always barter with whoever has the gift you envy. Yes, envy and jealousy do play a part. Bring a wrapped $10.00 unisex gift, (no castoffs from your closet!) to take part in the exchange. Partners and spouses-if you both want to participate, both must contribute a $10.00 gift. Also please bring an edible or drinkable contribution to share (please call me to find out what we need) and lots of holiday spirit! Volunteers please call Elissa at 561.272.0475 to help with this event or e-mail me at elissa12@bellsouth.net.

Guess how many people will be present the Holiday Party next month and win a prize! Last year we had 21, the year before (how many was it at "No Anchovies"?), and two years ago there were 35 of us present. What number will we hit in 2000? Your correct guess gets you a very special gift. See Elissa on December 9th. Only one rule: you must be present to win!
